Is this a good deal?

Hi all,

New to the forum. I have the opportunity to pick up an '89 911 Black Targa with 114K, great body and paint job. Repairs include general maintenance, alternator, battery, clutch, 02 sensor, and targa top. Upon the PPI my mechanic found several issues: three oil leaks (seals, hoses, gaskets that requires the engine/trans out (approx $3,700), and a break job (pads and rotors). Upon talking with the owner he now is willing to sell for 10K. The Kelley Blue book on that model in Fair shape is around 10.3K

What do you guys think?

That is a good deal. i got a 87 this spring, 77k but didn't need the engine to fix leaks but it was 15k. brakes are easy to do.

Sounds pretty decent. I bought mine for about the same. Mine is an '88 cab, had 124k, needs a bit of paint work, had a few leaks, etc. Good luck

Have you ever had an engine overhaul? How much work have you done to yours? Also, do you happen to know what was leaking i.e. was the engine removed?

This part looks like a gigantic while-you're-in-there waiting to happen:

How much do you trust the mechanic who did the PPI? How many miles ago did the previous owner have the clutch work done? The oil leaks should or could have been addressed then.

This mechanic is top notch - he thought it drove out well (engine, trans, and clutch). The seller was unaware of the oil leaks until the ppi, that's why he dropped the price down nearly 5k.

wow, 87 for $10k. Wow. Of course it's a good deal. What kind of gasket? As long as it's not engine/tranny rebuild

I think 10k for a G50 is a great deal. even if you spend $6k for a top end rebuild (and also address all that is needed in terms of gaskets, etc.), and if you can do the brakes yourself for about $600 in parts, you'll have a very nice driver for about 17k.

Good luck with the purchase.

Thanks John but I have been quoted 12-15K for top end rebuilds. 6k sounds great! Also, you are in Chicago. Where do you get your Porsche serviced? I'm a first time owner/buyer tomorrow.

I take my car to Eurosport in Bensenville. There are several other Porsche places around Chicago.

I think a full rebuild is like 12k. top end only should be around 6k give or take a G. I think if your prepurchase inspection yielded within approximately 10% leak down for all cylinders, you should not need a rebuild (top end or bottom end).

I had been following the car that you are talking about that I believe is for sale in the burbs. It looks nice from the pics online.

There is quite a big group of porsche enthusiats in Chicago. We have a thing called cars and coffee like once a month in one of the west suburbs where we all get together and talk shop.

Gotta love black Targas. Here is mine

I thought my answer went through, but apparently not. I've done all the work myself. Most of what I've done is upgrades/add-ons, but I did fix all my oil leaks by dropping the engine this summer. I replaced all the usual culprits for leaks. It cost me a few hundred dollars, but nowhere near the $3,700. My main leak was coming from the oil crankcase breather cover. It's on top the engine, so when it leaks, it goes EVERYWHERE. As far as an overhaul, I've never broken into the engine because I'm worried I might jinx it. It runs great now.

N chgo burbs here. I highly recommend Fisher Motors in Barrington. It is kind of a hike but a very honest reputable guy and a Porsche specialist. He did the ppi on my car last fall 87 targa with 28k one owner car former neighbor $13K

My brother had a bad experience with Eurosport in the past
