Well Here is a small update on the bare-metal strip and repaint of my 80SC in Talbot yellow.....
Finished applying my filler/surfacer coat of primer last night. I HOPE to have her painted my this weekend but this is wishfull thinking as I still need to water sand the whole car between now and then. I used a yellow tinted primer so that my base would cover better, as a bonus I can get an idea of what the car will look like with the Talbot top coat.... For any of you out there thinking about doing this yourself I must tell you that it is a LOT of work!!! But it is very rewarding when you see the color going back on the car. The worst part is the awfull mess that you create during the stripping process. And hopefully you wont find any suprises waiting under your drivers rear qtr like i did ![]() Well enough ranting here are the pics in chronological order...... Seriously, I'm very impressed. Call me a sick-o, but I look forward to the day I can strip a Porsche to the bare metal and experience the thrill of re-assembling the sucker. Glad someone finally noticed little ole me.. Guess I should have titled the post "Do you like the 996?" lol
The SC was originally Grand Prix White..... I had planned to go back with the white and had a change of heart. I had a 914 before I got the SC, did the whole strip and restore bit. Funny thing is the 914 was originally Canary Yellow and I painted it White... LOL Guess I am just Bass-Ackwards? Should be water sanding the car tonight 400 then 600. Hope to have the inards and jams all cut in by Sunday. Then with a little more water sanding of overspray and some minor reassembly I should be painting the exterior!! Man I feel like a cow headed to the barn, the closer I get the faster I want to go... I just have to keep reminding myself to take it slow, because its all of the prep work that makes the paint job look good. Not so much the actual spraying of the paint. Check back, I will post more pics as I take them, and when I am all done and have time I will put all of the pics on my website to document my nightmare.. err Project ![]() Ben in SC |

Ben,while on the subject of painting and that you have been there, done that,is it true that as nice as would be to have the perfect paint finish, that haveing ENOUGH paint on still a good thing, orange peel or not,so long as you can color sand and buff later?I too, will be shooting mine as well and just wanted some input.Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Steve ------------------ 1967 912 "in progress" |

Steve, I am by no means an expert. I am just a DIY'er like everyone else. But when you paint such as in my case, BC/CC. You will ALWAYS have orange peel, that is what color sanding is for. Just make sure and get enough paint on the surface that when you do have to "finese" out a flaw you have a thick enough layer that you dont go through your clear into the base coat. If say you get a run, I use a tool called a "NIB File" to get the run down to a level that the color sanding can take the rest out. As you said just make sure you get ENOUGH paint on the surface base and clear and you will be fine. Here is a good site for anyone looking to do a their first paint job. http://www.autobodystore.com They have a very active bulliten board.... Ben |

Ben, how did you strip it? I didn't see any chemical in the pictures.
If you used chemical, what did you have to do to get it cleaned? There is something about a car in fresh primer... makes me want to start a project. ------------------ Chuck Moreland '86 Cab "Sparky", '77 Targa "Sweet Pea"
