Gaggle of Cobra's spotted at Lake Tahoe
The wife and I decided at the last minute to head up to Lake Tahoe for our 11th wedding anniversary last weekend. We pulled into the Best Western off of the main strip around 9:30 at night and in the parking lot were a ton of very mysterious, low lying cars wrapped up in their car cover for the night. In the morning I roamed around and snapped a few photos of 40 Cobra's...It was a great alarm clock waking up to the thunderous sounds of those beauties.

Buddy of mine has one. scares the crap out of me every time I drive it. Sounds awesome though. I live in MA where Factory Five is based so you see a bunch around here at every parade, care show etc.

Just about everyone one of them had earplugs hanging from the dash...not only do you hear them but you feel them.

While vacationing in beautiful Cambria, CA., I too came upon a gagle of Cobra's. I was wondering how you readily tell the real deal from a kit car? Any quick tell tale signs?
Sorry for the ignorance, I just dont make it a habit to lust after things I can't afford ![]()

That is the Snake to the Lake drive done once a year. I have a Cobra and have made it with this group once back when I lived in the Bay area.
Nine9six how you tell if it is an original is if it is on street. Original Cobra’s are too valuable to put on the street. Very rare to see one. Telling them apart can be difficult unless you know what to look for and I’m not going to bore you. There are some Aluminum body replicas built by Kirkham, Superformance that cause confusion – not all of them are glass, and not all of them are kit cars. Some are definitely built better than others are. Price go from $40 to $130K depending on model and drivetrain. Anyway, if you get a chance to get in one or drive one it is worth the experience. And yes, it will be faster than you are prepared for. |

I drove a real one-CSX2151-on a race track-Westwood, BC- and I have yet to go faster in a car! But, I have never been so uncomfortable at speed in a car! I think I know how the hammer feels in a hammer throwing contest....

I was lucky enough to catch a ride in a 289 at Donnybrooke in the 60's.
It wrecked during a race the second day. I salvaged this off the wreck on the trailer. (With the owner's permission!) ![]()

Real ones are only seen like this: in Concours or historic racing events.
This one is all real with racing history,289 I think?, with another 427 behind it, from last years Newport RI concours. Both were original, kind of beat up with all the "patina" they could handle: my daughter liked the micro cars better! ![]()

That group was at perry creek winery in fair play on friday. The owner of the winery has a cobra (old plastic one) so he made a perry creek "Cobra" syrah with a cool picture of a cobra on the bottle. The wine is better than the cars in my opinion. I work on the car for him from time to time and dont like them personally but everywhere you go people have to stop and take a look.

Nope, there's a guy with a real 427 that comes to casual open track events (no racing) out here several times a year. He's the original owner and bought it in the 60's for around $10k...
