Hey,
I survived! On the way up Mt. Hamilton, I came around a 1st gear corner and right smack in the middle of the road was a black tarantula the size of my fist. I blocked for it until it crossed the road. I continued to the top, and stopped at Lick Observatory, place was deserted, no one around great vistas! Walked around the top, looking around, great views 360 degs. I started down the hill towards Livermore and was driving at a brisk pace, not too fast, no freeking guard rails. The local coyote population must have heard that I was gonna be coming through through in the "roadrunner" I raced 2 or 3 of the Wily E's through the corners, smoked by em in 2nd gear! I got to the lower section of the road and was carving through a 3rd gear corner and passed a real live no chit Road Runner, he couldn't match the 3rd gear pull though! Continued on the road and got to the junction, left to Livermore, or straight ahead to Patterson, had to sack up and went for Patterson.
As I was driving through the deep canyons(with no cell reception), I pondered several threads warning of the unreliable nature of the 2.7, thought puckit and caught another gear and continued carving. When I ran out of curves, I looked around and noticed I was on Hwy 5, Ahh who cares, headed south, got a Mickey D sweet tea and made a run for Hwy 152, headed west and made a run for Monterey, turned north and cruised up Hwy 1 to home.
Great way to spend 5-6 hours, all you 2.7 ha8ers, I say HA!
eric
P.S. The west side of Ht Hamilton is like WRC, dips divots and road condition limiting the speed, the east side is tight at the top opening up and turning into 3-4-5th gear running. All of it guaranteed to make your smile muscles sore!

Man, that brings back memories. I used to spontaneously make sundown runs up there like you did today. It's been at least a decade since I did that. This was before my Porsche days, but it was still worthy in a 1st gen RX7. Thanks for the flashback...

Great road ClickClick, I live near the base of the road up to Mount Hamilton in San Jose. It's been a while since I made the drive..........

But!!!!! ...... I met a tarantula on the same road, freaked the hell out of me at the time! Maybe it's the same guy, although my sighting was about 6 years ago.

San Jose to Mt. Hamilton is a great drive in early evening as the sun is going down, arrive at the top about 5 - 6pm and watch the sun go down over the rolling hills. Take a stroll around the different buildings and soak in the atmosphere.

How is the road from Hamilton to Livermore? I've never done it, I always just come back down to San Jose.

Dude, why drive all the way to Mt. Hamilton? Just head up Hwy 9 to Skyline. Boulder Creek to Saratoga Gap is one of my favorites.

Mt. Diablo is not a good p-car drive. Narrow roads and lots of cyclist (of which I am one).

Mines Rd. in Livermore is one of the best, almost no car traffic but a few cyclist and motorcycles. Del Puerto Canyon from Mines Rd. to Highway 5 is also great. Almost not traffic of any kind.

In the Woodside area, across the bay, Alpine Rd. Old LaHona, Pescadero Creek Rd. are all awesome with great scenery, little traffic and great twisties.

Dude,
I live in Boulder Creek, its kinda like a guy who lives on the North Shore and has to come to the mainland to surf Mavericks. I drive Hwy 9 whenever I go to work, so there!

Go down the back side, you won't stop grinning till you hit Hwy 5. I have a cramp in my right calf muscle from all the pedal work!

Common guys,
Didn't any of you watch any Clint Eastwood Spaghetti westerns? 0830 will put the sun right in your eyes for the best part of going down the hill, of course you could go from Patterson to Mt. Hamilton but that would mean going uphill, and when you drive a 2.7 gravity is your friend. Push your start back to 1030-1100 or so and it will be premium. If you are driving a lowered car beware of the west approach to the observatory, lots of grinders for your undercarriage. I like to drive roads you have to read, but understand if the sun is in your eyes you will miss the bumps and grind away.
Hola

At 0830 we should start in Patterson.... sun at our backs all the way.... then gravity IS our friend on the way down the hill into SJ... and we get there just in time for a beer... and a short drive home!
