80 SC Died while driving - Electrical

Stock 80 SC. Sorry it's so long, want to give all symptoms I know about.

Has Optima and permatune about a year old.

Very wierd, had driven 140 miles, was back home, pulling in to get gas.

Engine started missing. Wipers started going full speed on their own,

When it idled, it ran OK and the wipers stopped.

Then, a 'pop' under the dash and a puff of smoke maybe above the radio and it quit running never to restart.

Turn the key to start; nothing, no sound at all.

What worries me is that the year-old Optima was VERY, VERY hot, was leaking and the top of the battery looked bowed up. The carpet backing above the battery melted.

Is the alternator overcharging - wondering because of the battery?

What the h... was going on w/ the wipers?

Any ideas?

I will conjecture a voltage regulator failure and major wiring short (melted insulation causing internal harness shorts) behind dash - likely related.

Is the voltage regulator integral with the alternator?

If you have the OEM set up, the voltage regulator should be on the electrical console (chassis under the plastic cover) on the driver's side of the engine compartment. If the alternator has been replaced or upgraded there is a good chance it has the regulator mounted on the back of the alternator (non-fan side).
