new to porsche world
Hi!
I'm new to this forum and i just bought my first Porsche! I've loved these cars since i was a little boy. it was a dream to own one and now i finally have one i can call my own. I purchased a 1979 911SC with the 930 slantnose kit. The car is black with cork color interior (i think thats what it was called)? a friend of mine owned the car for about a year. car has about 97k miles. the slantnose kit looks genuine, no welded seam under the front fenders, wooded fins in the rear fender vents. unfortunately that's the extent of knowledge i have on these converted cars. my friend had a refurbished 3.2L motor installed along with some clutch work and other things. spent about $18K on all the work and he only put on about 500 miles on the new engine before selling it to me. anyhow, i know this may be a little impossible to do but i would really like to know some history on this car. the previous owner (not my friend) do not know too much about the car. all i know is that this car was converted by Firme Porsche in California. there is a plaque in the door jam that shows this. i guess my question is if member know who these guys are? do they do good work? bad? ok? any info on these guys would be great! tried searching but with no luck. thanks in advance and thanks to all of you for your postings.... great content!!! attached a photo of my car.. not a great shot but that's all i have right now. bobby ![]() |

Bobby
Just like you, I got a Slant Nose conversion 3 months ago. Professionally done but unfortunately no plaque... My only clues were an Italian flag on the rear bumper, Ferrari Horn button (has been replaced), radio installation shop location and previous registration locations. All in he Little Italy section of Montreal (Quebec). I e-mailed two possible Porsche shop but no reply so far. I'm thinking of posting an ad in the local paper. If you don't have them yet, you will need 2 Bentley books, 1978-1983 for the body & 1984-1989 for the engine/DME and other stuff. Well worth it at for $150 (for both) delivered from the http://www.bimmerzone.com/porschemanuals.htm. The previous owner took 3 year to do 2,000 miles. Did that in 3 months. Enjoy J.J. http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/JJ_911SC ![]() ![]() |

All, thanks for your warm welcome and for the compliment on the car. she is a beauty and so are all Porsches! I've had the car for a couple of weeks and i am enjoing every minute of it! i do have some issue with the car dying out when the AC is on. I am seraching for answers in this forum but as of now i haven't found any thread on it yet.. will continue looking.
Bryan, good to see someone local on this forum! not sure what a NACA duct is but i took more pictures of the car and see if what i have is a NACA duct. question for you, who do you take your porsche to for service? do you do your own repairs? J.J. nice ride! good luck with your search as well, hope you find out more about the origin of your car. i did pick up an bently manual from Pelican. i bought the Carrera manual, should i also get the SC manual? i got the impression that the body were the same for both SC and Carreras? if not i'll definately pick up the SC manual as well. Also, i noticed that your rear fender vents has 4 fins, i have only 3 fins, do you know why this is? ![]() ![]() |

In my excitement to answer I forgot to compliment you on your acquisition of the Black Beauty ![]() This site is great, anytime I had some problem, the forum came through (shooting 100% so far). As for the 4th Fins, I think it's just a different kit. The opening look the same but I got an extra one at the bottom, but you got an opening in the runner board which I don't (look good). One thing with the Slant Conversion is it's not in the book... Presently I got a problem with one of the light not coming up... So it's a bit more work to figure it out. These car are to be driven... As I mentioned I put more miles in three month than the last owner in two years. I go to car shows and let people to touch it (oh my God... what a concept). Let kids sit in and have their picture taken... converting them one at the time. Enjoy the ride and keep it touch (don't hesitate to answer posting...). Cheers J.J. As for the extra Bentley book, well for $75 (at bimmerzone) it would not be worth the fustration to find out there is a difference or break something. I even bougth the Hayse for quick reference on the road, should also carry a spare fan belt and spanner, in the trunk. By the way, Wayne's 101 Project for the 911 is a must... Send me a P.M with your e-mail address I'll send you 3 months of info. Last edited by JJ 911SC; 09-16-2009 at 03:26 PM.. Reason: Forgot... |

Gerard at Motor Werkes does the wrenching on my Porsches. 596-7758. Other than him, the only other person I'd trust is Scott at German Auto Specialists.
A NACA duct is the ones you see on jet fighters with an opening like a V. I do know one of my friends brought in a similar car to yours in 1990 from CA. He got it at a highline auction and the car was a black/cork 79 SC with a slantnose kit. He sold it to a cop that I think was on the Vice squad. Not sure what happened to it after that. The car had the boxed rockers with the vent in the rocker.

mine has a box rocker with the vent in it.. this could possibly be the same car! that would be awesome if it was, at least i can get some info on where this car came from. thanks bryan for the info and for Gerard's contact info. I'll definately give him a buzz if i ever need work done to my car. I would like to learn more about the car and work on it myself one day. i do know how to work on cars... just not on porsches! not yet at least! the car has been worked on by Chris from Air Cooled Hawaii. Chris was the one who put in the 3.2.
if you ever run across your friend and have a chance to talk with him, see if there is anything on the car that he remembers that is unique let me know? maybe i have that same car he brought in! thanks again! |

Welcome aboard and nice car! Just want to make sure that you know how to check the oil level properly. It's not like checking oil level on a regular car. Otherwise you may overfill by 2-3 quarts.

Mike, thanks for welcoming me, and for your compliment!
Its so funny you mentioned the oil thing because i did just that, over filled it by a quart! i checked it just as you would on a regular car, ran it hot, turn it off, wait a while till the oil settles and check the dip stick. pulled the stick and seen it way below the low marking. so i went to the store, picked up a couple of Mobile 1 and went at it. first i put in 1 quart... that brought my oil level to a little over the low marking. so i figured id put in more... one more quart should do it. check the dip stick again and it was only halfway between the low and max hash marks. this is when i stopped and thought to myself that something is up! the good thing is that i was already a member of this forum and learned how to check for oil level!! thank GOD!!! i was a quart over and i had to drain some oil out of the reservior. i thought i knew about cars but apparently i was wrong! lol! so much to learn... so little time!! thanks again Mike!! |

Welcome fellow slantnose
The widebody slantnose is just plain sick. Mine is an 83. Seems like when mine was converted they removed the option stickers and paint code tag. I don't see any weld seams or anything in mine either and the undercoating looks stock. I would also like to find out if it was an original M491 option car. Does anyone know how using the vin? Also I believe the paint color is champagne, what is the actual paint code for an 83 champagne?

We all wish they were. But I do believe that in 1983 they did 1...
I did come across another thread that showed what too look for to confirm it it was option or aftermarket. The last year that they did it (1989) the option cost alone was $25k, so this is a good indicator in regard to the buying price. Whoever did mine when to the trouble of scratching 83 out of the manufacturing date on the top portion of the door tag. For a mere $100, Porsche will give you a Certificate of Authenticity that will list the options, date of completion etc... My Paint code tag is still there (Grand Prix White) and was re-spray in the same colour. ![]() ![]() |

I refer to mine as well as Champaign (with Burgundy interior) but the exact colour is Weissgold Metallic (Whitegold) 537 or Platinum Metallic 055 or 655. They are often mixed-up. Yours seems more like Platinum. Check out this thread . ![]()
