Radio Power Antenna Brace...

I never use my radio, but I like everything to work so I replaced the non-functioning factory power antenna with an after market Harada Power antenna that looked very close to the factory antenna. I never bothered to attach the lower strap brace (brain fade) on the new antenna and after a year or so the fender mounting nut came loose and the antenna ceremonially fell to the pavement with a terrible noise. I bought a second unit and this time connected the lower strap that was included in the box.

6 months goes by and I find that the fender mounting nut once again was loosening up. Now I've added a second cross brace (.032" 2024 alum). I've included a pix. I used a S.S. hose clamp around one of the oil lines so I didn't have to drill any additional holes in the sheet metal to install the brace.

This won't end world hunger, but I thought it might be a good idea if someone is looking for a way to add/attach a second brace to their power radio antenna unit.

Hello,
Not to put a damper on your parade, but that stainless steel hose clamp around your brass oil cooler line is a very questionable idea. Combine the weight of the antenna, the heat of the oil and road vibration, your oil line will fail over time. How long? Couple a thousand miles, couple of years? Who knows exactly. Please re attach to something else!
Good luck
eric

Couldn't he just wrap the line with a small piece of rubber to isolate the clamp from the line???

Also Mitch, just a shot in the dark. You would not happen to still have your non functioning factory antenna would you? I am looking for one for parts..I need the fender mounting parts (nuts, washers, etc..) plus nice to have the extra internals..

Hey,
Mounting anything on that brass line is not good, but hey that's an aircraft mechanic for you, we are paranoid about everything!
Hola

Eric, I'm an airplane guy too... I've restored a couple of vintage airplanes, that's a pretty rugged piece of pipe and there's no strain on it. We'll keep our eyes on it as I understand your concern.

Gregg, I'll take a look to see if I still have the antenna.
