Can't engage a gear

87 911 has been sitting untouched for a year. Went out this morning and finally got the engine running but I cannot it to engage a gear. It is like the clutch doesn't work - we tried to push start it, but when you put it in gear and depressed the clutch you could not move the car.

Any ideas?

Will it go into gear when the car is off? Just read your post agian, so you can put it in gear. If car is in a safe place, place it in second and bump start it (try to start while it is in gear) as the clutch might be frozen/stuck.
