Question Temp Reduction with Oil Cooler Fan?

This is my first summer with the car, and the oil temp gauge is reading at about the 10 o'clock position. If I compare this to a numerical gauge (assuming it's the same scale), it's running at 230-240 degrees, which seems way too high.

I have an aftermarket front oil cooler, but it's not fan cooled. Does the fan significantly reduce temperatures?

Thanks!

YES! I changed the oil cooler on my SC to a Carrera cooler with manually switch fan. While on the highway in the summer, oil temps remain right around 210-215. When I hit traffic, I immediately turn the fan on. The oil temp holds right at 215. Without the fan, oil temp would rise to about 240 in Washington's hot steamy weather.

My '84 Carrera runs hot as well, but better by using Mobil 1. If you're not, try that as well.

I'd like to add a fan to my oil cooler, how'd you go about it?

Michael,

Is your thermostat opening up to allow oil to the oil cooler? Place your hand on the oil line going to the oil cooler after a test drive.

You all need to switch to a trumbone cooler.

My SC rarely goes above the 8 o'clock possition, top of red warm up area. Worst ever was in stop and go traffic and it hit 9 o'clock.

Now if I start doggin her out she will push to 8:30 if it is a warm day. For instance yesterday it was about 90 degrees here and I powered through the on-ramp to the interstate and left her buried till about 100MPH and left it there for about five miles and when I got off for my exit the temp was at 8:30.

I am guessing 8:00 (top of red) is about 180, 8:30 about 200, 9:00 about 220, and I will shut her off before we go any higher if need be.

Granted she has never been to a DE so that may fry her to death... I suspect so anyway.

In the long run I would like to put on a RUF front valance and matching oil cooler. Then I will do some DE events withour fear.
