3.6 conversions - use stock 3.6 airbox?

Hey guys,

I've got another 3.6 conversion question. Has anyone been able to use the stock 3.6 airbox when installing a 3.6 into pre-90 car?

I think I remember reading somewhere that the stock 3.6 airbox is too wide and the early cars engine lid hinge gets in the way.

If the interference is only with the engine lid hinge then perhaps a way around this would be to delete the stock engine lid hinges and go with the 911r style hinges.

Does anyone know for sure if the stock 3.6 airbox would fit if the stock early hinges weren't there?

The reason I ask is that I prefer to run a stock airbox vs. a K&N style filter. The stock airbox cuts down on intake sound volume which would be nice for when my son rides in the back seat.

Thanks for the help!

I used stock box and cover on my first 3.6 swap(964 uinto '76 C3) and stock box w/ modified cover on my second(993 into '76 C3) and K&N on my third

I think this is the closest to what I'd be doing ('95 993 into '77 S). Can you give me some details on the modified cover? Were the modifications needed to clear the engine lid hinge?

Thanks for the help!

Nuts. Opening up the stock box like that probably minimizes the effect of trying to use a stock box to lower intake sound volume.

Perhaps the '95 993 box is more similar to the 964 air box?

If not then it looks like I'd need to switch to 911r style engine lid hinges, or modify the right stock hinge somehow, if I want to run a stock 993 airbox.

Again, thanks for the help!

I checked in PET this morning and the '95 box is different than the 964 boxes and the 96+ vram boxes.

The '95 box is p/n 993-110-030-06.
