Hi,
I have euro 2.4T with zenith carbs. And have a problem with distributor. When I hook up vacuum to it, then at 2k RPM ignition becomes very late and engine dies. Mechanic told me, that it is due to that housing might be from other distributor. I I've ordered: 0.231.169.003. But now I have noticed, that the same is already installed... So, question is... Distributor is rotating clock-wise, correct? Vacuum port is hooked to the right side, or to the left? (when looking at it installed) I've got mixed at it... Maybe Euro and USDM distributors are different?

Perhaps the inside of the distributor is very dirty, and the weights and springs inside are not moving. Then, when the rpms come up, the mechanical advance is not working, and your timing becomes late.
remove thedistributor very carefully and open it up, and clean and lubricate it.

There are no differences with the euro or US distributors and all the 2.2/2.4/2.7 distributors spin clockwise. All the 2.4 distributors have the same advance curve so you should be fine with any 0.231.169.XXX distributor except the 001 which was a 2.0 distributor.
I'm not sure what you are asking about the vacuum port.

take off the vacuum and check your advance at idle.
How much advance? Then, rev to 4000 RPM or 6000 RPM and check advance. How much advance?

Check the internal ground strap connecting the breaker plate to the outer housing.

The 2.7 dizzies have a vacuum retard, not advance. The retard is not needed and can be disconnected w/ the line plugged.

0.231.169.003 is a 2.4T distributor 72 to early 73. As I mentioned, all 2.4 distributors have the same advance curve.

plugged means the line is obstructed or closed off. Plugged in means connected. Connected means it will retard @ idle.

I think
that the distributor you have in there is dirty inside, and the mechanical advance in the distributor is not working. take off the vacuum line and plug it for now. Set the timing of the distributor to 5 degrees before TDC. Rev the engine to 6000 rpm and the advance should go to something like 30-35 degrees before TDC. If it doesn't, something is wrong inside the distributor and you should have it repaired. When everything's working you should plug that vacuum line in and it should take the idle timing from 5 BTDC to 5ATDC and that's about it. The car should run fine without the vacuum line. Many people don't even use it. ![]()
