looking for velocity stack elbows?
has anyone ever heard of or seen a 90 degree elbow that will bolt to a carb and then bolt a stack to it? my thought is that if I can run the stacks horizontally there's much less chance of something falling in. see highly detailed engineering drawing. thanks, Don.

Just intuitively I would think you would be disturbing the (therotical) laminar flow and generating a lot of turbulence at the intake. Might cost you a little performance. It will be interesting what others say.
And besides, everyone just puts a tennis ball in the stacks. How would you keep your balls from falling on the floor if the stacks were horizontal? |
One of the best things about a 911 engine is the ability to run straight (almost) Velocity stacks to the back of the intake valves!
Not to mention all that fresh air coming in from the engine cover vent. Why would you want to change this? >>> To stop something falling in is not a good enough reason in my opinion. There's a lot that can be done to avoid this. (Filters, Metal screens etc) You can also make leather socks to fit over the stacks when the car is stored. (Make some/one for the exhaust outlets while you're at it) |
good points. I don't think a sweep 90 degree in a pipe would restrict flow enough to worry about. ideally a 110 degree or so would be better, a down angle wouldn't allow water in. this is a street car so inclement weather is a possibility.

It's amazing the volume of air consumed by an engine; dirt too.
Get a racy air filter setup instead and lose the track look. Do you race on the street where you would need max. power? No. Right? I notice plenty of twigs, seeds and misc. matter stuck on my ITG foam filters, and that's just the visible debris. Without a filter, everything in the atmosphere is fair game to be ingested.
