87 3.2, can I tell if I have a 24 pin or 28 pin DME with out opening the box?

I think 1987 was the year that had either the 24 or 28 pin DMEs depending on when it was assembled.

Anyone know of a way to tell without opening the box?

I want to take advantage of the maxhpkit sale on chips (ends today), but I won't have time to pull out and open the box tonight.

I could send you both, and you could send back the one it isn't... :)

Russell

Russell,

Thanks for the offer.

On your website the drop down is for 84-87. Then 88-89.

Are most 87's 24 pin?

It's hard to say, I don't have production numbers with that statistic, but in my experience thus far they are. But I've had a few that were not. Also, I've seen other earlier years with 28 pins, and later years with 24. This means at some point the car's DME computer has been replaced, probably due to malfunction. It's always best to check prior to ordering, but in the case that someone gets the wrong chip, I just send them another at no additional cost.

Russell

Thanks again Russell.

Quite a few discussions going on tonight about your chip. Your sale is definitely generating interest.

I have an engine from an 87, I have a 28 pin chip in the dme. I believe they switched over at some point.
I would suggest you take the time to check. it is pretty simple to do.

The discussions I think are doing more to generate interest than the sale itself. Since a lot of people started contacting me today saying this is the first time they've heard of it, I will extend the sale until Monday. But once the sale is finished, my chips are also for sale here at Pelican. They don't have the 93 octane version listed yet, but I'll notify them to add that. I encourage people to purchase through Pelican to help support this wonderful forum, you will still get the same direct customer support from me directly.

Russell

Hi All,

I thought I'd post this link for posterity as it may address the OP's question:

DMEHacking

FWIW, my '87 Carrera (manufactured 2/87) has the 28-pin chip and I am assuming that it is the original Motronic "box". Visual inspection of the "box" in my car's label indicates that it is 911.618.111.20. Upon perusing the complete service history of my car, there is no receipt indicating that the DME was replaced. However, it could have happened at any time, since the PO could have easily done it himself.

Best,
Tim

Not in the above link - I believe the change from 24-pin to 28-pin occurred around June of '87, so if you have an earlier production date it's likely 24-pin, later likely 28-pin. I'd say May-July you'd be smart to look.

rberry951 11-25-2009 06:28 AM

The link is good info, but as Wavey says it's still a good idea to look. I've run into a LOT of clients over the years where there DME or parts thereof have been changed by previous owners. Few have owned their cars since its production, I always suggest looking.
