msd on 3.2?
Hi to all, i have used msd 6al and digi 6 on my early cars and find them really good especially on the carbed engines.
I would like to know if an msd digi 6 or 6al can be installed in a 3.2 with dme? thanks in advance rommy |
What's the point? The DME ignition is already robust enough to fire my plugs gapped at 0.060" on my 86 as long as you get rid of the stock Beru cables.
Regardless how you go, you will still need replace your copper Beru cables for carbon core or equivalent to handle the higher voltages required to fire a bigger gap. In addition, I would recommend upgrading your cap and rotor to HEI rated components. Cheers, Joe |
I would like to know if someone has done this as well.... I would like to use it to retard my timing back 4 to 6 degrees.....

I have installed a MSD 6AL on mt 1985 3.2 targa, but without changes in ignition timing. Subjectively response and performance seem much better throught the rev range. MSD reccomend increasing the plug gap but in my case that was associated with misfire; much better with the factory gap

In my situation, I was able to take full advantage of the energy available with the stock DME ignition by upgrading my ignition cables, cap and rotor to make the 0.060 plug gap work. Cheers, Joe |
You can install an msd with great results, many report an improvement in many areas:
here's one thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/443697-msd6al-protomotive-3-2-turbo.html |
The advantage for adding a MSD 6200 in my application is so I can add the optional retard timing control module. P/N 8680. Then I can retard the timing for my Nitrous set up. The stock DME can only retard the timing by -2.79 degrees with the fuel quality switch. By adding the MSD system I could adjust the timing back to 15 Degrees.
What cables, cap and rotor did you use Joe? Thanks, Mike |
+1... Also interested in hearing of any possible alternatives to the $50 factory cap. It's not a huge deal to me, but I never understood what made our caps 4x more expensive than the SC caps.

Can you use the MSD on a twinplugged 3.4 using an andial splitter? if so would you need 2 units? and would it help when runniing 10.5/1?

To what I understand the DME triggers the MSD without the tach adapter on the 3.2.

The MSD white white wire connects to the old coil negative (orig small green wire)
Someone has done it here - http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/313547-msd6al-carrera-3-2-engine.html |
