Did 930"S" steering wheels come on the 930 and what is a 930"S"?
I was looking at this 959 on eBay and while wondering WTF is up with all the unnecessary changes got to wonder about the steering wheel. I've always wondered what a 930s is and was the steering wheel of that name ever attached to a factory Porsche? Every 930 I've seen had a steering wheel like mine.
From eBay ad: Steering wheel: Remove original steering wheel and hub assembly. Replace with new leather wrapped three spoke competition steering wheel, including hub assembley and spacer. For some reason I can't capture a pic from the ad:

Thanks. That must be the "S" reference. I couldn't find any pics in the Ludvigsen set of books but I found this pic online of an '87 slantnose:
The steering wheel does look similar. ![]()

That would be correct! Factory 930S wheels were originally made for Porsche by Italvolanti.
The one pictured above looks like a MoMo of some sort.

No, don't think so. Slantnose is "flachbau" in German, and later became the M505/M506 option. Before 1987, these were hand-built under the Sonderwunschen (Special Wishes) program at Werk 1 and did not have had an option designation.
Much information on this thread: Slantnose, Slant nose,Slope, M505 factory 930S documents, registry, ultimate, flachbau The factory would convert SC or Carreras to slant nose - either at time of production or post-delivery - not just 930's. Dealers also converted cars. Couple of threads on the 930S wheel. The first thread also has a picture of the original, factory-fitted, 930S wheel from GeorgeK's car: 930S with embossed crest--anyone know? The steering wheel on that 959S is the 930S MkII wheel, similar to the 968 club sport wheel. They're made by Aitwe, and the only Porsche-specific parts are the center horn pad and the adapter. According to Chief Pelican Wayne in this thread: 930S steering wheels - comparison

930S was the classic sports car of the 80's. Came complete with gold chains, cocaine supply and blonde passenger. :^)

I believe this is a 930S wheel
Installed on my car. It came from Pelican (got the receipt) and it is very close to the dash, which is OK for me - no accordian thingie.
Also (interestingly) it sits high - the rim is NOT concentric - which gives more knee clearance on straight ahead, but takes some getting used to in sharp corners. ![]() Mark Petry Bainbridge Island, WA |

Quote:
There were few if any SC/Carrera cars converted by the factory as the cost was usually more than the value of the car. Keeping in mind that from 87> the option 505/506 added $26k to the cost of the car! ![]() I think this thread was primarly regarding the steering wheel of such of the 930S.. so getting back on track, the "special Wishes " cars orginally came with the wheel as pictured pictured below. Some later cars also had this wheel, or the other style which started this thread (pictured above), or a stock style wheel with an embedded crest. It was pretty much up to whatever the owner/purchaser wanted. My previously owned factory Special Wishes "flachbau" came with this wheel as did my dealer converted (Alan Johnson Racing) "flachbau." ![]()

Spuggy is correct.
The "S" does not mean slant. Also when talking US model 930's with the M505 option ('87 thru '89 and commonly referred to as the 930S) that was not the wheel they came with. This was. ![]()

Again, as stated.. the earlier special wishes cars came with the wheel that I posted.. that's what was in my Special Wishes car and others I saw in Germany at the time.
I also Referenced your wheel as being what was offered during '87 thru '89.. as well as the cars being refered to as the 930S. Although, I have seen 2 cars that came through new.. with the earlier style wheel.. as ordered from Porsche. So I think we're on the same page.

Yep we are.
I wasn't posting specifically in reference to your comments but just to add a picture of the wheel that came with the US cars assuming you didn't order something special.

In Europe, in some years you could get a little hotter 930 if you knew which boxes to check when you ordered the car. Sometimes they were referred to as a 930S, or 930 SE. You can see them in some of the books about Porsche, typically the ones from the UK. I'd say most of them had the slant nose front end but not all of them.
In the '80's and '90's, some dealers that did a lot of mail order business sold various steering wheels that were ususally labeled 930S wheels. They weren't all the same and perhaps the name was just a label that they got stuck with. Maybe it helped sell the wheels, I don't know. JR Last edited by javadog; 10-04-2009 at 06:31 PM.. |

Thanks guys! This board is awesome. I've never seen a horn pad like in Kilodawg's pic. It looks like the crest is inset a bit. And no "Porsche" on it.

The 930S for 1983 and 1984 ( Euro Only ) had a 330 hp (DIN) performance option which was available on a build-to-order basis from Porsche. With the add-on came a 4-pipe exhaust system and an additional oil-cooler requiring a remodeled front spoiler and units bearing the add-on often featured additional ventilation holes in the rear fenders and modified rockers. The intercooler was also larger then the normal 930 turbo.... Hope this helps...

I've been looking for one of these 930 wheels. What I am being told are that the RUFF 930's came with the AITWE and did not have a Porsche emblem on it.
The one that has the porsche emblem in the center leather is the 930S's and came with Factory 930S. Also could have been brought with a 930 as an option in the late 80's for around $1200 bucks. The one that has the color porsche emblem not in the leather is after marked. I hope this helps. Rob

I have the same exact wheel as mpetry and nineball with a receipt from the previous owner for a 930 steering wheel from AJ USA (Lamborghini of San Diego).

occb2 or anybody else for that matter,
Do you have any photos of the 930S wheel as it's called today actually on a factory 930S? I have never seen one (though I can't say I've scoured the universe). However, I do have the Porsche Exclusive brochure from 1988 and while they have pictures of three different wheels that are available none are the wheel that is referred to today as the 930S wheel. Onboost's wheel is listed as well as the one I posted and also the regular three spoke from the Carrera but with a gold Porsche crest. Seems a bit curious to me that I never see pictures of people who actually have one that came mounted on an original car...... ![]()
