Clutch travel
The car is an 87 911targa with a G50 trans.
I've had the car now almost a week its been perfect and I'm not sure if this is a trait of the car or if I am having a real problem. The clutch lets out pretty much right on the floor, it has almost 3" of slack at the top before it engages or starts to engage rather. When you let it out and the pedal comes to rest you can then pull it aprox 2". Its just play at the top of the pedal. Do I need to adjust anything or is this the norm? The clutch does not slip, it grabs good. By that I mean you can put the clutch under a pretty fair load say in 3rd gear from a stop and ease into the gas, still no slip. Thanks in advance for your help! |

I do not know a lot about these cars myself but i do know that is not right and it is definately out of adjustment and possibly missing some springs???
Doesnt sound right though. Chris |

I have an 87 model with the G50 transmission. The clutch engages after a reasonable amount of travel but as Christojen suggested is sounds like a spring problem.

I spoke with my mechanic today about the issue with the clutch. After getting a basic run down of the G50 by him and reading a couple of the books that the car came with I discovered: The G50 has no adjustment for travel aside from at the floor board under the pedal. It has no return springs, those are only on the earlier cars. This is what happened. The car sat up for several months while being painted. In that time the little Orings likely somewhat dried out. I drove the car quite a bit before this the issue reared its ugly head. In short we ended up bleeding the hydraulic lines both at the breaks and the slave cylinder on the trans. This resolved the issue for the moment but will likely happen again until I can get the car to my Porsche mechanic at which time we will install a new clutch also. I hope this helps another Pelican! |

G50 is a hydraulic system, there are no springs as you found out. the only thing in there is a stop on the pedal board, but that does not come into play here.
it may be a good idea to check whether master & slave cylinder leak. not sure you need a new clutch right away - that would be an engine drop & a lot more work than the m&s cylinders.
