a/c help
I got everything in my 80 sc a/c back together today. Pulled a vacum for 30 minutes. Put in one can of 134 with the gauges hooked up. The readings I got were 35 on the low side and 230 on the high side. Temp here is south Florida was at least 90 degrees. I was afraid to put any more gas in it for fear hurting the compressor. Is this normal or could there be a blockage in the expansion valve? How much 134 should the system take. Thanks

something is not right.
do you have air fllow over the condensor(S)? i usually put a box fan on the rear glass blowing on the rear condensor. check the fan on the front one if you have one. if you close the gages then turn off the pump and let it sit, you can check for leaks. it should hold vacuum. a blockage will have a very low, low side and a hi high side. also look for a freezing line.

Something is not correct. It should hold about 3 cans of Freon. The high side
should be about 2.5 x ambient temp, so it should be about 225 # and the low side should be around 40#. The fact that you have the large pressure differential tells me your expansion valve is working. One can of Freon should not have been enough to see these pressures. When you pulled the vacume, did you pull from both sides high and low. I always want to see the vacume down around 30# and be able to hold this vacume for a couple of hours. The pressures seem to ok, but are your gauges accurate. Check the piping on the high side (smaller) and see if it is hot, and check the low side and see if its cool. These are easy to get to from the compressor back side. If you have temp differances then it is cooling. If it's not cooling in the car check ducting. Regards p930man |
