Flywheel tool question

I have a buddy who has a 12mm 12 point tool with a 3/8 drive. I am wondering if the 3/8 drive is strong enough to remove the flywheel bolts with 90 foot lbs and red loctite. Last thing I want to do is snap my buddys socket .....

It'll be tough.....prolly a good idea to use a cheater bar and preheat with a torch. Craftsman ratchet or cheapo?

use a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter, then you can use a 1/2 drive ratchet and a cheater bar. At worst you break the adapter, but with some preheat to breakdown the locktite you should be fine.

Joe,

The bolts are easy to remove ... if they were previously installed with Loctite just heat them up enough to soften the Loctite and they will come out easily.

I removed mine with an impact gun as well as the flywheel bolts and it was a piece of cake !

Cheers !

6 bolt flywheels are 115#. some are really on there. if you get a big fat mallet and hit each one real hard and sharp directly on the bolt head, they tend to come off easier. good luck with a 3/8" tool.

+10 on the cheater bar. Have a few different lengths/ girths of tubing and fence post. That can slip over a wrench or rachet. Easily the MVP of all tools in the garage. Not kidding.

I have a breaker bar we've used on cummins diesel pulleys. Its got a 1 inch drive and owe is about 40 inches in length. I've snapped 1/2 to 3/8 adapters before so a good whack like john says then some heat and I think I'll be good.
