Used/Rebuilt DME/ECU Control Units

After replacing sensors, battery, distributor cap, rotor, etc. on my '87 Carrera, with no luck, I took it to a real mechanic and he thinks the DME/ECU unit is toast. This was to cure a no start condition (basically no spark at the plugs). I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck getting a used or rebuilt unit? I see in Pano that ****** Auto has rebuilt ones for sale, and I am close to DC Auto in Rocky Mt., NC, so thought I'd check there. Any other suggestions?
BTW, the mechanic opened the DME and couldn't find any obvious breaks, cold solder joints. Is there any place that I can get the old one refurbished to use as a spare just in case? Thanks for the help.

Sorry, don't know why I got *'s instead of ****** Automotive. Anyway, that's the place that advertises rebuilt units.

These senders, because of the harsh environment around them, do eventually wear out. Either of these senders giving out would leave one stranded out in the middle of nowhere. Change them out and rest assured that you won't be having any problems.

I'm not talking about the reference and speed sensors; I've already replaced those. What I'm talking about is the DME/ECU control unit, the "brain" that is bolted down under the driver's seat. Anyone know where I can find a used/rebuilt one? Thanks,

Pelican's software does that if you type in the name of a competitor.

You can send it to Pelican and have it rebuilt:

Something to check..... I found the #6 fuse from the passenger to be the wrong size. It requires a blue fuse. Every once in a while the car would not start. You could jump start it by pushing it down hill, but not always start using the starter. This is the fuel pump fuse.

Did you try your DME in another 911 to confirm the DME is no good? Could be the coil or the most common DME relay which provides power to the DME computer.

Don Ivey 10-09-2009 04:24 PM

I have not tried another ECU/DME because I don't know anyone with a similar car, but I have replaced everything but the ECU/DME, so I kind of narrowed it down to that. Yes, I've thought that maybe it could be something else, but can't imagine what.
One thing surprised me though. When I first started chasing this problem down, everybody said it probably wasn't the ECU itself, but the relay or sensors. The ECU is "bullet-proof" was the response. Today, however, when I talked to vendors who sell them, their consistent refrain was that these things go out all the time, and they sell them often. In fact, several vendors were out of stock for used/rebuilt ones. Just saying! Anyway, thanks for the help and pointers. I've ordered a rebuilt one, and may have the original rebuilt as a backup. Thanks,

Hi Don, You've probably already done this, but just in case you didn't...Have you checked that all your grounds are nice and clean? Particulary the ground strap between the chassis and transmission and the one at the battery? Mine were corroded, and I'd hate to hear after throwing all these parts at the problem, it's something simple like dirty grounds.

Don Ivey 10-10-2009 05:48 AM

Grounds were the first things I checked, and all were cleaned - didn't make a difference in starting. I'm anxious to get this thing solved and back on the road; I miss it! Later,

Don,

I've got an '87 DME that's my spare that I'll consider selling. It's a known good unit - pulled it out of the running car myself.

Let me know if you're interested. Good luck getting your car fixed!

ischmitz 10-23-2009 11:26 AM

Just have the DME tested and if found bad rebuilt. As others said there are several choices out there. Pelican Parts is amongst them and since we are using this BBS why not support the host?
