Spare Tires?

I was looking at replacing my Saab 9-2x with a 128i/135i (god I wish they brought the 130i).
Anyway, it doesn't have a spare tire. I know Porsche is doing this as well. Personally, I am amazed that this is legal. All this safety crap, and yet they let manufacturers sell a car without a spare.

I do think run-flats will eventually provide improved safety, but when you travel to remote areas (like me), you need the assurance of an actual spare. I will never call assistance for something so easy as a tire change, but even if you don't think like I, this option is pointless when you are 100 miles from the nearest small town that will not have a replacement run-flat.

What are you thoughts?

you can get away with a cell phone in L.A.

...but in the outback of the Inter-Mountain West, you'd better have a good spare.

Most of Oregon, not to mention Wyoming, has no cell service and just a gas station can be 150 - 200 miles away. In some areas, I plan my gas stops carefully in ANY vehicle.

You can also get stranded and run out of water pretty easy in a lot of places with paved roads.

I agree that technically you can get away with a cell phone in LA. But, I always see people sitting on the road waiting with a flat. My wife mentioned one of her male co-workers (not that gender should matter) waited 1.5 hours till the support vehicle arrived.

I am amazed that people will wait for so long for such a simple task. Now it looks like you may have no choice if manufacturers go this route.

At the least, cars should have space for a spare. Maybe the actual thing could be an option. Given cars keep getting bigger, you'd think it would be easy.
