84 3.2L Cab, Electrical Issue
Hey guys, the new owner of my 911 is having a previously unknown electrical issue. On the road to deliver, my co-driver behind me noticed the tail lights were not always coming on, but when I hit the brakes hard, the lights would start working again with normal brake pedal action... for awhile.
I'm also told some interior lights are now hit or miss, like the radio, etc. Any ideas? I'm recommending replacing the 2 major grounds at the battery & transaxle, and since I'd replaced the master cylinder pressure switches this year I figured to look at those also. Thanks for the ideas, I'd like to help them out with this.

Fred,
I'm no electrical expert, and I haven't referred to Dr. Bentley on your particular dilemma, but...the first thing I would do is clean up the ground wire cluster located at intake port #1 at the motor. The majority of grounds end up at this location, though their are several other grounding points sprinkled about the car. If that hasn't solved the problem, I would run a multimeter at the problem areas and check for proper ground before replacing the 2 major ground straps you mentioned. Although probably inexpensive, why throw money at a problem that hasn't been properly diagnosed? Just my .02 cents... It's also entirely possible that someone here has had a similar problem in the past, and knows of a secret bugaboo that causes this problem. Hopefully, this person will chime in.

See here for brake light issues:
86 carrera brake lights The interior lights could be grounding as kidrock suggested or just a loose connection. Edit - Just noticed you did the brake light switches, some folks have issues if they do not "prime" the switches before installing, trapped air is the issue.

Thanks guys, I'll pass on the info to the new owners!
They got the Bentley & Factory manuals I had, so schematic-wise they should be ok, with the exception of, one of the previous owners added the 3rd brake light / CHMSL from a later model.

Had the same problems with my car. New ground strap solved it.
