Turn signal relay stuck on
Hello all - recently I noticed that my turn signal relay is stuck on - meaning that I can hear it "blinking" constantly while the ignition is on. Release the parking brake and it still blinks even though the dash indicator goes out. Turn signals and hazard lights function normally. I'm certain it's the relay because I've reached back and grabbed it and I can feel it. Wiggled it thinking it was a bad connection, no change. Any ideas? Car is a 1973.5 911 T with completely stock wiring, no headlight relays added, etc. I'm hoping it's something other than a tired relay - as far as I know it's never been replaced.
Thanks in advance. |
Don't know squat about early model electrics, but I'll bite...
Sounds odd because I always thought/assumed that the bimetal flasher drew it's power from the same ckt that the lights used when switched on. Do the turn sig lites not illuminate when the ts switch isn't used, but you can hear the flash? What's doing when the parking brake isn't released? Try popping the light fuse to see if indeed is the flasher? On edit: I took a gander at the 73 T schematic on the home page - I only see the L, R, and Emerg switches as the input. One clue is the L, R indicators extinguishing, telling me it could be a short in the Emergency path, but they would light the lites (are they very dim maybe when you think it's off)? Pop the mulitple fuses (L & R and emerg signal) and evaluate. Or pop the flasher to see if you have a hot line from the L or R on Emrgncy input to it. assuming you don't want to buy one straight away. |

Depending on your answer, you may have a problem with the brake circuit--the switch in the MC or the emergency brake. The hazard lights do not depend on the ignition being on and your symptoms only happen with the ignition on. The problem likely lies, then, in a circuit activited by the ignition switch--turn signals, brake warning lights. Let us know what you find. |
The parking brake indicator (flashing red light) functions normally - it blinks when the ignition is on and the brake is set, and stops blinking when I release the brake.
The turn signal indicator lamps function normally - the left & right, front & rear lamps blink when I move the stalk and the brightness of the bulbs is normal. The dash indicators (green arrows) also light normally. The headlamp switch has no bearing on this behavior, on or off. I will pop the fuses and see what changes - thanks all. Edit Do the turn sig lites not illuminate when the ts switch isn't used, but you can hear the flash? Yes - the turn signal lights are not illuminated when the t/s switch isn't used, but I can hear and feel the flash - the relay. Basically, the relay "blinks" constantly while the ignition is on, completely independent of any other switch being used, And everything else functions normally. |
hmmm, My parking brake lite doesn't operate like yours does ('87 vs 73). That is, mine doesn't flash, maybe this is a model year feature and another clue.
Sure it's the ts flasher your feeling/hearing? could there be another one for the p brake I wonder? |
turn signal relay stuck on - problem solved
Well, my local shop diagnosed and fixed this problem - it was the brake light switch on the master cylinder.
