I keep a spreadsheet in Google Docs. I had been using Excel, but always had to go to the one computer where it was stored. Now, I have access to it anywhere. And even though Google Docs spreadsheets aren't as feature-rich as Excel, it's perfect for what I need.

I'm not real high tech like the guys with the chalk on the sidewalk! :D (That was pretty funny!)............but I just save all my receipts from the part(s) that I purchase. When I actually do the work, I write the date and mileage on them when the job is done, and throw them in a folder for that particular car. Inside the folder is not real pretty, but this system works for me!

I post my work on my site:

The Maintenance Files

It's been a cheap year this year. The weather was so crappy I barely drove it. :(

one nice thing about putting it online is that when you transfer the car (and if you do not sell it, then it still gets transferred to your heirs) all the info is right there.

it seems like 'known' cars sell pretty quickly - ones appearing in Excellence are often sold afterwards & a few with builds described on Pelican have sold quickly as well

in general, complete records are a good thing - esp. for the DIY modifier, who may not recall what they did years afterwards when some new & improved component is manufactured

Take pics of any major work.

Good advice. I keep a log of service on a spreadsheet (openoffice) with dates/mileage and comments. I keep receipts for parts in a folder. And I take pictures of most mechanical repairs (not fluid changes), mostly to share here if the occasion arises.

Any potential purchaser is going to want to get a PPI done anyway, so that will probably count for more than your service history. The condition of the car should speak for itself.

I have an expanding folder similar to this:

http://www.oppictures.com/SINGLEIMAG...217AHD_1_1.JPG

In it I keep all receipts, all inspection reports, etc.

I also keep a journal type record book with personal notes.
I include date and mileage with each note. Some of it is maintenance, some of it is just anecdotal junk - like making a note about taking the car to the Porsche corral at Petite LeMans.

It may be all a completely useless effort, but then again maybe I will have a kid who will enjoy reading this junk one day.
