Anybody catch the brand-new vacuum-packed-959-in-a-wooden-crate ad in the new Pano? Hope they didn't vacuum-pack a mouse in there with it! Interesting photo. It's a UK broker. Wonder what the price on THAT baby is.
And an undriven silver RS America, 33 factory miles, asking price $89,900? A trifle optimistic perhaps? Vic 88 Carrera (driven) |

Those people have to get real. The new Turbo is probably chaeper and it kicks the outdated 959's ass. I have seen RS Americas for sale in the $30's. Why this one is so special is anyones guess.

Um, this is a 959 we're talking about here. When you value these cars you can't really compare them to a production car. This is a museum piece, a pure collector car. You're not going to be driving it. I know, I know... Porsches are meant to be driven. Yes, yes. But not this one. If you have a 959 Sport with zero miles in a hermetically sealed crate it belongs in a gallery not a road. Anyone who would drive this car would probably also dine with the silverware rescued from the Titanic.
As for the RS America with no miles, the jury is out on that one as to the value. It's hard to value a special edition car with zero miles. Some collectors will pay way over any reasonable value to have it. |

A 1989 Speedster with 17 miles went for something like $75,000 last year; that car won the Manhattan trophy in the PCA concours in its history. But the Speedster is ... a Speedster. An RS America is more of a garden variety "rare" car, to me, anyway.
As for the 959, it still holds its own pretty well against modern supercars; check last months' Excellence where it was tested against a new Turbo, 2 993 turbos, and 964 3.6 Turbo S. I'd say that's a million-dollar car, at least, now that they can be imported to the US legally. Which was that person's plan, no doubt. Vic 88 Carrera (30 miles ... 30,000 that is) |

If an '89 Speedster with 17 miles is a $75k car, then a '93 RS with 33 miles is a $55-60k car, I'd guess.

I came away from that article in Excellence feeling that the 959's time has come and past. I think it finished last in the drivers opinion. Did I miss something?

The fact that the 959 was even considered as an entry in that Excellence competition speaks highly of its advanced technology for 1986. Sure, the 959's time has somewhat passed. The later cars were developed from what was learned with the 959, so one would expect the 993, 996 TTs to build/improve upon the 959 technology.
I'd have to say the 959 is still quite impressive considering it's development dates back to the early eighties. Nothing else on the road back then could even touch it. I guess that's why it cost $250k 1986 dollars. How many $$$ is that today? ------------------ Kevin 87 Carrera |

A friend of mine ordered one of the Motion prepared big block Camaros back in about '68. It was offloaded at KCS railroad yard in a foam filled wooden crate. The workers crowbarred the crate open. He put in gas and oil and busted it off. Drove it right off of the crate base.

Seinfeld
#023 (if memory serves me). Brokered through a private AM dealer in the UK.
Driven from the factory to Switzerland and vacuum packed. Jerry Seinfeld bought the car.

Bryan must be bored today!
Does someone have a scan of that Pano article from 2001? That would be great for my archives. Now is the time for all of you Pano-savers to come through! -Wayne
