Ever wonder what it looks like under the rear deck?

I had a new rattle coming from my rear deck area, and it was driving me nuts. So, today I finally got around to pulling the deck to have a look at what might be loose under it. I thought while I had the deck removed, I'd take some shots. Obviously, this is not an amazing mechanical feat or anything, but I like to have pictures before I take something on, so maybe this will help someone else out if they need to do a similar operation.

The deck actually covers both the horizontal back area, and the vertical padded area behind the folding seatbacks. To take the deck off, you remove the four obvious screws (two of which hold the leather snap straps) from the vertical padded section. Then you lift the vertical section straight up so that the clip in the center of it unhooks (you can see this in the pictures). Then you just pull the whole assembly forward. In the pix, my deck has been rotated forward a little over 90 degrees. Putting it back is the reverse of taking it out, except that it's a much bigger PITA. Getting the top screws back in was really the biggest challenge.

I did get rid of the rattle. All I did was tighten a few loose nuts where the speakers were mounted. It was either that, or just the removal and replacement that put it right (there's honestly not much back there to rattle). Also, as a bonus, I now know what sort of speaker I have back there .

I think it would have ben a lot easier to service my CIS components recently if there were an access hatch in that area through the firewall.

Yeah, I was surprised at how deep they are, given what I've read about needing flat speakers back there. Does your car have the two hollowed-out areas like mine? It looks pretty rough back there. Even with the thick pad on mine, it slipped right back into place without much trouble.
