'81 911SC Option Group

Anyone know what Option Group J16 would have included in 1981?

Thanks,

Bob

The Porsche Red Book (Patrick Paternie) list options for the SC models in fthe form"M##" not "J##", so it is somewhat unclear. He does note that his list may be lacking some factory options, but it does not have an M16 option noted.
Sorry, this does not really help you figure out the answer to your question.

It's on the CoA from Porsche. It may be in error, as they show the paint color as metallic matched to sample, and it's actually Anthracite Grey Metallic.

My '81 also has J16 option group which is written on the inside of the warranty booklet. Then that is followed by 3 option codes (typical M#s) 197, 553, and one other for 4 speakers/pwr antenna (forget the #). I think the booklet basically says car has J16 group PLUS the three options after it.

Never got any clear answer, but I remember someone saying J16 was for 16 inch wheels, white front foglights and a few other basics that many SCs have. I have searched with no luck on this also.

In terms of options, my targa is pretty basic so perhaps compare notes....my car has...
16 wheels
Foglights
Cruise
leatherette interior
Hi amp battery equipped as option (88Amh)
Pwr antenna, 4 speakers
Alarm
A/C
Manual heat levers

My CoA states:

California Equipment
Option Group J16
Higher Amperage Battery
Headlight Washer
Leather Sport Seats -L/R
Automatic Heat Control
Electric Antenna w/4 Speakers
Pirelli Tires

The car has the full leather interior, so I'm assuming that was part of the J16, but for Interior Material Color/Type it reads "Black Leather / 69. It did come with 16" Fuchs, foglights and the rubber spoiler lip, as well as cruise control.

Somewhere I have an original '81 brochure. Maybe it's in there. Somehow I doubt it.

Actually, Anthracite Grey Metallic isn't listed as an optional color for 1981. So, it may be a factory color but it would have been special ordered in 1981, thus the paint to sample tag. In 1981 they listed a Black Metallic, which was more of a grey than a black. Prior to that, they offered Dolomite Grey Metallic. I don't know how far back you'd have to go for Anthracite Grey. I looked back through 1978 and there was no mention of it.

The J16 code is likely a group of options. Back then, VWOA was the importer for Porsche cars and they sometimes would group certain options together in a package. The various books and web sites devoted to Porsche option codes don't have any info on these codes, at least that I have found. There's also nothing in the brochures. You have to find some documentation that was given to the dealer by VWOA, for use in ordering the cars. Or, you have to find someone that owns a similar car and still has the order form for it.

For example, I ordered an '83 SC in the summer of 1982. Part of my order included R49, which was comprised of the options 197, 395, 455, 533 and 566.

I doubt that the full leather interior was included in J16. More likely it had to do with the wheels, fog lights and cruise control. The black leather interior would have been identified by a two digit code, usually combined with the paint code. For example, in 1983, black full leather was YA. My car was Guard's Red, so the full color/interior code was G1G1YA.

The rubber front spoiler lip was probably added after the car was built.

Good luck with your search,
JR

Do you happen to remember seeing an R14 option back then? My 83's option codes are...

220 Locking differential
409 Sport seats left and right leather
469 Black headliner
474 Sport shock absorbers (Bilsteins)

C02 Equipped with catalytic converter

I probably saw the code back then but it's too far back to remember. I only know what R49 was because I still have a copy of the order form for the '83SC I ordered and it is spelled out there.

The dealers had a bunch of books that most people never saw. The sheer number of codes was overwhelming, especially when it came to interior fabrics and colors. I had access to them through a friend and I have a little documentation from those days but not enough. You can probably assume that any option that is on your car that isn't specifically spelled out on a COA is in the group.

J16 math

As javadog states, my revised guess is that J16 Group was 16 in wheels; white front foglights and cruise - maybe even sport shocks too. Based on the info above, perhaps we can back into it....

I am confident my car has J16 Group as documented in the warranty booklet at the dealer originally sold from. Has three additional options listed after it.

And looking at my car....

My car does not have full leather.
Did not have front spoiler lip when new (I added it)
Regular style seats
No headlight washers
No Autoheat

Has 16 in fuchs. but no addl code
Has foglights but not listed as addl option code
Has cruise but not listed as an addl option code
I believe it did have sport shocks (green bilsteins) but not listed as any additional option code

Additional options listed with M-codes:
Alarm (listed as additional option 533)
Hi-amp battery (listed as additional option)
Power antenna/4 speakers (listed as additional option)

So perhaps these three 'options' (wheels, cruise, fogs) comprise the J16 Group. Maybe sport shocks also, as perhaps they were a complement to the 16in wheels/'low profile' tires.

If you can follow all that, perhaps that narrows it down for J16 Group for 1981 SCs.

The '81 brochure is of little help; I just checked it.

Interesting. Mine also has the green Bilstein sport shocks, but they aren't listed separately.

Perhaps that's it - 16 in wheels, fogs, cruise and sport shocks. In five years+ of ownership, never seen a better answer yet. I do seem to recall somewhere someone saying bilsteins were in there as well. Maybe the answer is out there, who knows.

The sport shocks included with the 16 in wheels make sense and also make sense probably being lumped into J16 since they are kind of the lone 'performance' option on our cars that is not called out separately.

I can see J16 Option Group as some kind of basic 'touring' package - wheels, shocks, cruise and fogs. Just a guess...

I'll check out the info. on my '81 tomorrow to see about any options/packages listed in the manual.
I'm the 3rd owner so many items may have been changed...I know the car has 4 spkr sys. with power antenna, fogs, full leather front seats with leatherette everywhere else. It has 16"s but they may have been added as they are 7's and 8's. S
Wheel fitament/pressure sticker in engine bay does show 16"s though.

My car is Metallic Black. (708) Antracite Grey is similar but lighter and wasn't offered until around 1986. People often mistake my car for Antracite in bright sun...or Black if parked in the shade.

Older picture for color ref.

I added the chin spoiler and 3.2 wing.

Here is the options column of my '83 sticker. R14 was a pretty expensive package, but what the heck did it include? The only things not listed as options worth mentioning are 16" Fuchs, a sunroof and head light washers. No cruise and everything else (Shocks, seats, LSD, fogs, etc.) are listed and priced separately.
