How can I easily identify my pistons and cylinders?
 

Due to some not-too-gentle prodding from Gunter I have been trying to find out exactly what modifications were made to my engine when it was enlarged back in around 1981.

Bruce Anderson, in the 1987 version of his "Performance Handbook" mentions Max Moritz (made by Mahle), RSR and SC Ps & Cs, yielding varying CRs, and providing a 3.2L displacement. People on this BB often mention JEs as a popular option. Wayne also mentions several in his books.

The problem is, the PO is a self described Luddite about these things and can't provide any info, and the builder (Rudy Bartling) has been unattainable for the last 8 months or so.

What would be the various ways for me to tell what mod I actually have?

Your cylinders will have part numbers stamped on them and a year of manufacture.

JE only makes pistons and they are not 'Matched' to the cylinders. I am running JE 9.5's in my 2.7.

To figure out what pistons you have, you pretty well have to ake the engine a part or try to have a look in the cylinder with a borescope...

It is easy to differentiate between CIS pistons and RS pistons. THE CIS pistons have a goofy done on them (this prevents you from running a high lift cam) whereas the RS pistons with the ssame CR have a mild dome with a notch on each side for your valves.
