959 Dakar

Some recent photos of the 959 Dakar car I thought some people might like, especially the wheels (center lock hubs with 5 pegs as lugs)

these pix are exactly why I am against restoring race cars to concours perfection. This car should be put in a museum and nobody allowed to do anything at all to it.

Thanks for sharing.

Funny, I have been thinking about starting a thread about this car. My first encounter with Porsche was watching this thing go on TV. I remember it being a "911C" and after searching for 911C I did come up with some results in rally san marino around 1980 but nothing else. I didn't realise it was a 959.

It would be interesting to know if this car is being run, is it a replica, the real thing? where is it?

+1 to herr_oberst.

These photos were taken 8/14/2009 at Laguna Seca. I believe this is a privately held model that is authentic. Maybe someone knows the history of the car, it is well documented in a book recently. This appears to be the Rene Metge #186 car, 1985 I believe, broken oil line and engine failure.
The tires were the same size all around, yes 195/70-16...on a 959 (normally aspirated).

some info

Those are British plates in case that wasn't obvious. most of the rally teams are based in the UK.
Based on the suit and headset in the back, looks like the car is still being driven.
should definitely be in a museum!

The winning 1986 Metge car. Photos from 1998 Monterey Historics.

I don't know the manufacturer but it was discussed in this thread:

Who made these 959 wheels?

I like the leather shift boot. Nice touch.

A nice write-up I found on this car at Tuthill. They road tested a 959 road and rally back to back.

In one of the pics, between the seats is a lever and a piece of tape near it that says "Pull for diff lock".

How is the diff locked by this lever or knob? I'm familiar with diffs and boxes, but would like to know how the diff is manually locked. Cable? Hydrolic?
