Red face Interstate Battery - No Drain tube to be found...

Help...I just cleaned up a nasty BA spill in my 87 targa - think I have it cleaned & covered - I have not had the car very long, but noticed there was NO overflow drain tube anywhere to be found. Interstate battery with vent tube hookup.

Does anyone have a picture to show where the tube would be installed and routed correctly for proper drainage?

Thanks for any help...

TT

Welcome. I don't have a pic of where the tube goes but (as with my car) many previous owners thought it wasn't needed and just got rid of it (bad idea). I switched to an Optima battery so no tube is needed.
p.s. We have an unwritten tradition that newbies post a pic of their car. I hope you can show off your new prize.

I just went through the same thing. My car is 99% rust free but I do have some forming now on the cross member (I think that's the right part) under the front end. The paint has worn away next to the vent on the battery and I have the white residue under it and long the front bottom of the trunk. One of the 3 drain holes on the bottom has started to rust. I removed the battery and soaked everything down several times with baking soda and water solution to neutralize it then rinsed the hell out of it. After that I used my compressor and dried everything out as best I could. I plan on letting it sit for a day or 2 to be completely dry and then going after it with that paint that reacts to rust and turns it solid. It is going to be a pain to get it all in there but with a spray bottle and some time I should get it all.

Once everything is done I will be replacing it with an AGM battery, most likely an Odyssey.

I've got an Interstate in my '85.

It has a oblong almost rectangular vent in the center top pointing toward the fender.

The plastic tube has to be forced to fit but it works.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the Interstate battery. Using an old school acid battery is asking for a rust problem. I have an 86 Targa and switching to a Gel Cel battery was one of the first bits of maintenance I did. The Optima was pricy compared to a standard battery but now I don't have to worry about finding a pool of corrosive battery acid eating a hole in my baby.

If you do replace your battery with an Optima you will need to get a longer negative ground cable as the spacing of the terminals is different.

There are no issues with Interstate batteries if installed correctly and maintained. I have been using them for 20 years.. no issues.

Stop by your local shop or an autoparts store that sells Interstate and ask them to order a vent kit. This is a rubber hose with a molded end/elbow that fits the oblong vent on the battery. It will likely need to be extended with some polyurethane tubing.
I ran mine out of the same gromet hole that is used for the fog light wiring harness.

Thank you - where does the tube run to from the battery - outside the car? is there a hole for it? mine is missing the tube too.

Great - any description on where to run the drain tube out of the trunk through the chasis? picture would be great - cannot locate a hole to outside for it.
