Installing late oil cooler in an early 901

Hey

Just thought I would post some pics of progress to date to thank those that have been helping me with advice thus far for my elephant cooler instal!

I'll post progress pics as work develops. Decided to run the 12AN stainless through the rocker (to keep the exterior looking stock). Surprisingly easier (took half an hour)

Holes at rear ( there is a double skin here so I had to remove the torrision bar to get my drill in deep enough.)

Rust inhibitor wax while I am in there

Front two holes in wheel well

There wasn't enough room to drill a larger hole for the grommets. Being stainless it will be fine. THere are fasteners eveywhere!

You may wish to wrap the lines with vinyl or rubber tape where they pass through the sheetmetal to enlarge the diameter and have a snug fit. That will eliminate any chafing from vibration.

Wrong answer! You will have a catastrophic failure shortly after you start driving. Be sure to post up the pictures! But what do I know? I only worked with SS lines for 20 years. Aluminum would slice through that line in a few hours of flight, but your Porsche is different.
Good luck, I hope that 3.6 conversion goes well after you seize your existing motor.

-12AN is borderline inadequate for this use.

Why not use the Elephant early hard lines made for this application. They are the correct size and will flow the proper amount of oil.

STock versus stainless

Hey Len

Not using stock as is costs a fortune to get them shiped to Australia. Also, I am keen to keep this 912 looking 100% stock from the exterior - don't want ugly brass lines hanging out like an appendage

I still live in this false hope that 912's might be worth something one day..... hmmm....

Len the ID of these hoses is the same diameter as the oil thermostat, the oil tank outlet + the stock brass lines so I hope this will be okay?

Yes Eric, I am looking forward to seizing my motor - its a 3.2 BTW.

Here are some more pics :

Having a clearance problem in the front well. These hoses are so darn big it looks like they might strike. Any thoughts?

I could run them along the middle per stock lines but then I have no way of getting the hose up to the cooler unless I put some sharp bends in. If it runs along the very top I am worried it might heat up and bubble the paint work.

Cheers

I would run them along the top arch like the stock brass lines. I can't imagine them getting hot enough to bubble the paint as they don't conduct heat as readily as brass. I have not heard of the undercoating bubble when in contact with brass lines so I would doubt the more durable automotive paint would survive nicely. I'm certainly no expert, so others with direct experience with very high oil temps should add to this thread to either confirm or dispel the lack of risk.

By top I meant the top of the tub sheetmetal, along the seam of the fender attatchment--like the route of the hard lines. Hoses could be affixed with small pipe clamps similar to those used to mount AC hoses. I assumed there would be clearance enough with the flex lines at that level. If you were talking about mounting the lines flush along the top of the fender itself, I guess I'm not clear as to the problem you are facing.
