Strange engine number

Hopefully somebody can help me. I have a 911T 1972 Targa. The engine number is 6230792. According to the Porsche Red Book the engine should be a 1973 E engine. Now the strange thing, top of the engine is yellow. Anybody an idea how that can be?

Someone replaced the fan shroud?

Your car probably had an engine failure at some point, and a "long block" was purchased as a replacement. Although not original, the "E" engine is a better powerplant, and the original '72 T (yellow) shroud was fitted to it.

To further unravel the mystery, if you can remove the air cleaner you will be able to see an ID plate on top of the mechanical fuel injection pump. Please post the number (0 408 126 xxx) on that plate and we'll know if you also got the "E" injection pump. If you did, have a little fun and buy a "911 E" engine lid badge for the car!

Number found

Thanks,
Found the MFI number: 0408126015
Curious if this is a E or T engine.

Does anybody know how a E engine number can be combined with a T MFI number. Is that possible?

6230792 is the engine number off a 1973 911E. It was a European car. When was the car built?
My Targa is the 87 modell with the 87 numbers but was delivered in 1986

No, it's a US car. Strange isn't it?

twistoffat 10-30-2009 08:56 AM

Very. I posted a German 911 thread on VIN and engine numbers that I found useful. On it yours is listed in Black as a European car. Are you sure its a US car or was it possibly an import at some stage?

Don't know. Bought the car for the hard body and (almost) original interior. Didn't get too much history.... The car VIN is 9112110763 and that US spec Targa 1972 2.4T. Maybe sometime an European engine ended up in the car with a T MFI. Lot's can happen in 37 years.
Engine is an issue, 2 cylinders ok, 2 just and 2 not working. Lot's of smoke. Have to open it up I guess.

According to the table you would originally have had a motor nr in the range 6120001 to 6124478.
Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Good luck
