911 expandable OIl Return Tube
I have 1990 911 C2 with an oil leak and ordered the expandable oil retun tubes from Pelican. Frankly removing the oil tubes was a snap. Now does anyone have pointers for installing the new expandable tubes that I received over the weekend. The trouble I have is once I get the new tube in place, are there any "inside" tricks of the trade to be able to extend the tubes so that I can attach the "ring"?

It's hard to do because the "other" end tends to come out when you try and expand the tube.
What I did.. After I seated the engine side I secure that end with a pair of grip lock pliers and with another pair of pliers expand the tube until the O ring seals into place. Be careful not to dent the new tubes. Use lots of oil to lubricate the O rings and make sure the sealing surfaces are very clean. Once you get them close you can use a big flat screw driver to leaver them in place. You'll see the snap ring grove suddenly appear when there seated. Have the snap rings on the tubes before installing them as getting them on after is almost impossible without damaging them. I have seen a U shaped clamp with a custom made fork end used to do this. It's big because it grips across the belly of the engine holding the tube into it's place. Like a third hand... It was made from and old valve spring clamp. The type that grips right around the head and not just from one side. Hope this makes sense.

Rod,
You can stay right here and search "Hose Clamp Method". It's a piece of cake! ![]()

silicone paste is about the only lube that will allow the o-rings to slide inside the tube and allow the outer o-rings to enter the case and cam tower. dow 111 or dielectric compound. i use two large long handled needle nose pliers. once the cam tower end is in, hold it with one and use the other one to pull/pry/twist the other end into the case. the left front snap ring can be a challenge.

agree with the hose clamp method........first generously lubricate the O-rings with silicone grease. then gingerly clamp the hose clamp over the outside of one of the two halves of the oil return tube. make sure you leaving enough room for it to "extend" into place. then use the hose clamp as a point of leverage and/or grip to push the return tube into place. i can't remember what tool i used to push it in place via the hose clamp. once you feel the O ring slide into the groove, remove clamp and you're done.
