Quick question on engine rebuild price
 

I did a search and couldn't find my answer.

I'm just curious how much a top end rebuild would be on a 3.0 with 110,000 miles?

Will I need to rebuild the transmission, gear box, etc..?

Just go to "search" use the advanced search tab and type in top end for 911 Tech Forum and there are tons of threads.
But to give you a completely uneducated answer - $5k if you have someone do it, $3k if you do it and no, you don't HAVE to rebuild your trans unless it needs it but it's not related to a top end rebuild, it's a seperate issue.

$1K if you do it yourself, and stick only to the top end rebuild, and if you do not have any broken valves, springs, etc. At the same time, if you have to replace a few dilvar studs, and if you can get some cheap steel studs (good used ones are fine) then you may get lucky and still stay under the $1K.

$3K-$5K if you let someone else do it. It is really all labor (machine work is also labor).

If you are inflicted with the "while in there" syndrome, all bets are off. If you find anything major broken, all bets are off. The tranny is a totally separate deal but at 110K, you may need it. 915 boxes don't go long before they wear out enough for a refresh. And a good refresh is $2,000 if you do it yourself. The parts are just really expensive even used.

Guys prices have gone up; I just completed my top end this month with new lower studs, new rings, all new gaskets and seals and a full valve job. I did all my own work except the heads. The total project cost was $3,795.00 of which 48% was for parts, 24% for specialized tools and 28% for machine shop services. DP Lindman.

Great post! I'm curious as to why an '82 SC needs a "top-end" job at 110K miles? That's, usually, really premature.

DP, did your engine already have Carrera Tensioners?

wow, I was a little dismayed to see the cost of the 915 rebuild. Must be some good metal in those synchros...:eek:

Peter yes my engine already had the Carrera update when I bought the car. I tore it apart at 73,000 miles to replace the Dilavar head studs since two were broken on the left side.

I did my valve job last year on the 80SC. German Precision in Sunnyvale charged $750 for the heads. The gasket set cost $100. He gave me free used steel studs (all 12). Nothing else needed to be changed. The total cost was $1,000.

Granted, I had all the tools for the job already.

$125 each synchro
$175 each dog teeth
$250 each slider
$200-$300 each bearing
$200-300 for a gear set, used.
$50 for gasket set
$150 minimum if you have a spun bearing, can cost up to $800 if you go UUC.

So if you do a refresh on 1st, 2nd, and fix a spun bearing, that is about $1500 after all is said and done, with shipping charges, and oil changes, and ...
