Non turbo to turbo?

Has anyone out there gone from owning a non turbo to a turbo and had any regrets? I have an opportunity to trade my 88 Carrera 3.2 for a 89 930.
What, if anything, would I regret about owning/driving the 930 compared to a non turbo?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Maintenance wont be as easy....have to remove the intercooler to do most of the work....but the 89 930 is the best 930 to have since it has the 5 spd g50 in it. Not to mention better brakes and suspension. It is also the only 930 I would consider....but I am just going to flare my 87

I went from owning an M491 Carrera to owning an M491 Carrera with a Turbo (360hp) so that's a pretty close to an '89 (5sp, wide, turbo brakes, 300+ hp)... Once you get the feel of 300+ hp there's no going back, an '89 930 really is the ultimate 930 too, I would swap it in a heart beat! You will go from having EFI to CIS which I think is a big leap backwards, I really dislike that system but being the car that it is I would overlook that..,until I saved up for an EFI conversion!

I am having the same dilemma myself. I have the chance to buy a 91 964 with a 3.6 turbo converted to 3.8 with a 6 speed tranny. This animal has 435 rwhp, believe me over the measly 200 I get from my SC the difference is phenomenal, I am going to go for it....

Hey Wurls,

If you're hesitant,i have an 89 Carrera 3.2 that i would swap in an instant for
an 89 930 Turbo...
Don't know who would want to trade a Turbo for a non Turbo but i'll drive mine down to
Ontario and even trade it with a full tank of gas ... lol

Cheers

Given your location this must be a 'second car' for fair weather.

Buy the turbo.

I just sold my 88 930. It was a point and shoot type of car. Very fast, in straights. You had to be careful in the corners. It was close to 360-380 rwhp. I bought a 83 SC, never drove one before. Came across a nice example, checked out good so I bought it. This car is a blast to drive, close to half the HP, lighter and much more responsive. I love the sound and I love taking corners at high rpm. After driving both, for me, the choice is easy. The SC. It is much more fun to drive. It might be different if I was on the track, I suppose it depends on what track. It is a personal choice, I like the smaller, lighter, more nimble feel. Also very classic look.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
My 3.2 Carrera has the DME relay box in it, which are known to fail and leave people stranded, but I don't think an 89 930 uses this DME relay...so that would be a huge plus if that's the case. Anyone know much about the mapping system in a 930?
The only drawback I think I have about the 89 930 would be that it will land me speeding tickets, and where I am, they seize/impound your car for 7 days if going more than 50km over the speed limit. It sucks to have a fast car here.

How about this question then...who has converted their non turbo body cars to a turbo body by adding the fender flares? I know it would depreciate my cars value. Any plusses or negatives to doing this?

Cheers!

IMO the only person who would trade an 89 930 for an 88 Carrera must know something about the 930 that he's not telling. $$$$$.

Pretty much irrelevant in my mind. Buy a spare DME, keep it in the car.

After about 7 years with two 911 Carrera's- bot a 92 turbo but held on to the '87 911. After 2 fantastic summers and great reliability recently sold the turbo and kept the '87. Loved it in every way but found it less practical as a daily driver. Also was not an ideal DE car- you go from 230 hp to 330 hp in about 1/2 second and better be pointed in a straight line with no one immediately in front of you. Was a great experience but one best enjoyed as a second summer/ dry pavement car- IMHO.

Cool

+1, Shadetree!
Your vid says it all.
Sure, turbos cost more to maintain are harder to drive.
But work on your driving technique, and you'll be a better driver for it...
You haven't lived until you've spun one!

JUST DO IT!!!

Only if the the turbo was maintained. It could be a nightmare or your best ride..

Converted my SC-TARGA-to a 3.3 Turbo- Lots of work. I approx. 400hp to the wheels. 5speed gearbox-915 rebuilt.. etc..etc.. A real sleeper.

Going 60-130- side by side Z06-505HP...And walking him. PRICELESS!!!
