Cold starts are taking longer than before

Hi gang,

For the last few months, my p-car has been starting as reliably as a Honda. But last week I noticed that cold starts were taking longer than usual. The motor cranks strongly (batteries are new) but it takes longer to "catch" and turn over. It still starts every time, though, after a few seconds of the motor cranking.

I do my normal 5 full pumps on the gas, then turn the ignition. I do not keep my foot on the pedal when I start it, though (just cause I never had to before.)

If the engine seems to be taking longer and longer to turn over, what could that be a symptom of?

Sander,

Is the starter turning slower now than it used to?

If so, then the same recommendations I gave Stephanie in the following thread apply:

Warren,

No, the starter seems to crank as strongly as ever. I did read through that other post before, but my symptoms seemed a little different.

The starter seems fine...it just takes longer for the engine to catch (once it does, however, it runs strong).

I usually don't keep the pedal on the floor while starting. Perhaps I should start doing this? Five full pumps was all it used to take for a good, fast start.

Sander,

If you are certain that valve adjustment, ignition wires, plugs, timing & points are all still OK, then you could measure the output of the accelerator pump for all six cylinders. If it is equal and within spec, then I don't know what to tell you.
