Beware - ebay flake - used2flyn@aol.com (Janet)

I posted my '82 911 on ebay last week. I scanned copies of all receipts in addition to listing all positives and negatives. Receipts were in excess of $12,500. The high bidder - used2flyn@aol.com (Janet) - came in at $14,100. I was very pleased.

I put her in contact with the mechanic that did all the work plus an independent mechanic to verify the shape of the car. The independent noted a couple items I was not aware of (being a new 911 owner myself). He told me the color was not the original color (changed from light green to red - but a very good job) and the carpets were not original. The previous owner recently installed new, non factory, black carpet that I thought looked really nice.

Little miss ebay bidder never once asked about how original the car was, whether carpets were replaced, change in color, etc. I didn't think to post because I didn't know. I had done some work on the car to set it up for the track and disclosed everything - roll bar, belts, lowered, new shocks, etc.

After speaking with the mechanic, she sent me a nasty e-mail backing out on the purchase because she was not aware of the repaint or the change in carpets - that was it. She indicated that she was looking for an original car. She also posted a negative rating about me on ebay.

Both mechanics also stated that she did not sound serious and was looking for a way out of the deal.

I am not selling the car anymore - very bad taste in my mouth. The moral to this story is - beware of used2flyn@aol.com. I do not consider her a serious bidder.

Buyer's remorse. It gives professional car salesmen nightmares.

She has a legal right to back out from her offer after the inspection.

HOWEVER, if those items were important to her, she should have done a much better job asking you about them so you wouldnt have to go through all that hassle.

And the negative ranting on you on ebay??? what was thatt all about? you should write one about her!

well, good luck selling your car.

I sold another car three months ago on ebay and was hooked up with a very honest buyer - the transaction went great. But the car was only $4,000 also. I think I'll stick with lower priced items in the future.

Thanks for the replies.

ebay does come up short!! they take your money in a hurry but do very little to protect you from trigger happy idiots that can ruin your rep that you made them rich getting or even worse allowing unscrupulous people to RIP YOU OFF!!! there is no substitute for good old fashioned face to face selling PERIOD!

Yes, as someone that's purchased cars on eBay, I'd say you have to be cautious of a buyer that doesn't make a pest of themselves before the auction is over. Invariably they'll learn of some deal-breaking fact *after* the auction is over. One seller was shocked when I just showed up and got the car - I'd made such a nuisance of myself asking questions before bidding that he'd figured I wasn't serious. But once I had all of the bases covered, I had no reason not to follow through. If you ever decided to sell again, the best questions you can ask is "what information would keep you from buying the car? What are you looking for?" It's better to scare off the lookie-lous and nervous-nellies beforehand than think you've got a done deal and have it fall through.

And yes, a lot of this stuff should be the buyer's responsibility, but common sense isn't as plentiful as the name implies. This way, you know there's at least one intelligent person in on the deal - you.

I sold a mini cooper on ebay when the buyer came to pickup the car I was outside doing some final detailing and cleaning on the car. I asked him if he wanted to drive the car before finalizing the deal he said no I will have plenty of time to drive it on the way home. He paid me for the car and left. Not even a test drive!! I was surprised.
