2010 911 Turbo worth waiting for?

Is this new engine design all it is reported to be or just something new to boost sales. I also am a bit worried about a purchase with the resent big discounts being offered. Not that that is not a hook, but how low will it go?

Have friend tried to buy one in Dallas, had 2600 miles. He offered 78,000, it stickered for 130 and dealers cost was 116( consumerguide.com). He didn't get it bought. Didn't know about new engine coming out

Not sure what is changing, maybe direct injection(?) DI came out on NA 911s in '09 MY. It's definitely a big improvement in fuel delivery design, (more efficient=more power everywhere/lower emissions/better fuel mileage)+ no pre-detonation worries on any pump fuel. (Engine knocking due to octane).

That said, the previous 911s were state-of-the-art gas engines before DI came out so it's not like they were inefficient, filthy pigs. I'd say that it's a personal decision based on the price of perfect used ones, your personal finances and how much that savings matters vs. owning the latest/greatest, etc...

Any 997 turbo is one of the best ways to burn gasoline ever put on this earth.

I think my biggest fear is the intermediate shaft failures. The ( new) conventional split case design is proven in the past, just not sure with 500 HP how well it will fare. I am all for DI and not really to concerned with RMSs since I think that has been fixed. Just starting early gathering some real world experience. This is not easy since there are folks that have spent top dollar and could be reluctant to discuss problems, maybe not. At any rate I will have to wait for the new car smell to fade a bit before my 01 Boxster S gives up her spot.

The 2010 turbo is an all new car car, there are style updates and you can get one with the PDK which is a great match for the new motor. DFI and new paddle shifters for the PDK are just part of the big updates. There are no real discounts on a 2010 turbo. On the 2009's if you can find one there is still 15k cash back plus dealer discounts. Let me know if you're interested and I can get you more information.

The 997 turbo engine, as well as the GT3/GT2 are completely different from the Boxster and 996/997 case. They may not even have an intermediate shaft but I'm not sure.

They have switched to the same crappy motor that is in the naturally aspirated non-GT cars for the Turbo now. Only GT cars get the old motor (based on GT1).

Looking down the ownership road a bit I would be hard pressed to choose a new Turbo over a GT3 or a GT3RS. But hey that's just me

Depreciation is insane on these. You can typically buy a 3-4 year old Turbo for about 1/2 of original sticker. Some of the calcs I did in the past result in per-mile costs of about $5-$6.

Exactly, half or better in 3 too 4 years, and with less than 15K. So what is this about the "same crappy motor" I thought the 2009 and 10 were the ones with out the intermediate shaft and with improved oiling as demonstrated in that awesome test machine video. Am I missing something?

FWIW,..The 2010 Turbo got the new 91A engine, not last year's GT-1 based one. The only car still using the GT-1 type motor is the GT-3 & GT-3RS (as well as Cup and RSR variants).

The new Turbo has a turbocharged version of the 91A 997 motor and completely different from the M96 version found in the 1999-2008 996-997 cars. On paper, its a big improvement over the M96, however only time will tell how durable it is.

Is there a link to the actual break down of the new 91A engine?

So guess no break down as of yet. Thanks Steve for the above. As for the allocation. There is always some one who does not go through with the purchase. However, my 911TT will be 3 to 4 years old with less than 10K on the clock, half price or better, with the option I want. I know some folks just park them in the drive way to impress. I like to get my moneys worth out of some thing that was meant to be driven and get stone chips. If I were still working my 01S would have well over 100K for sure, maybe more.
