1978 Porsche 911 SC alternator belt

Replaced alternator belt and it snapped in half again. Cloud of smoke etc.... Car still starts so I don't think its alternator. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Only 3 shims on bolt could lack of shims cause problem?

Does the alternater turn freely?
It should turn easily without the belt on.

How do I determine if alternator is turning without belt on?

Turn the pulley with your hand. If it turns, then the alternator is turning. If it doesn't then no, it is not turning.

You need to clarify things just a bit, after confirming the alternator is not seized.

As herr_oberst said, you need six shims, total, in some combination--between the pulley halves and between the bolt and outer pulley. You said you have three. Is that three total, or three between the outer pulley and the bolt? Do you have all six shims?

As Bruce posted, do you have the correct belt? What size is the one that broke?

Yes, improper number of shims can cause your problem. Let us know what you have.
