Help fitting a harness bar
Car is a 70 coupe; bar is nice but manufacturer unknown - it's supposed to fit an early 911. The distance between the bolt holes for the original shoulder harness is 43 inches. The distance betweeen the mounting tabs on this bar is 44 1/2. Photos show where I stopped the attempted installation.
You can tell me it's upside down or bassackwards or whatever, but can someone tell me where I'm going wrong here? TIA ![]() ![]()

Is it for a Targa, maybe?

Looks like you have the Brey Krause part. They list it for 74-89 coupes: Brey-Krause Harness Mount Bars and Trusses for Porsche
Possible that there's a difference in the distance between pre- and post-74 coupes? |

To mount this bar to a 70 model you need to fabricate a threaded bung and tig weld it into the B pillar. The early cars do not have a threaded insert there like the later cars.

Thanks for your responses guys. JP911 hit it on the head. The picture on the Brey-Krause site is exactly what I have - it's for a 74-89. I guess there is indeed a difference in distance between the mounting holes of the early and later cars. Curious though that some catalogs list one part number for 69-98 coupes. Some fabrication needed perhaps, as rsscotty mentioned.
Anyway, glad I wasn't stupid with the installation - just on the purchase! Anyone want this one?

Why not shorten the bar a little rather than mod the car? Cut one end off, shorten the bar by the 1 inch, fit things up and take it to a welder that can Tig it back together. Moving the bolt holes down will change the belt angles and unless you are very short of torso take the angles out of the good range.

Good suggestion and I considered that, but this bar is too nice to cut. I think I'll just sell it, and buy the correct one for my car.

You should not shorten the bar. This would mount it way too high. It is in the proper position as shown in the pictures. Doing the modification for threads in the pillar is the only way to use it.
If you don't do that then sell it. |

Getting the right bar is the true way to go if that option is open.

I will look into the correct bar, but now I'm a little more confused. If the pics show the correct height as rsscotty implies, does that mean I'll have to do the pillar mods to install even the correct bar? I had assumed all along that the correct bar would mount into the upper holes in the pics, and the brackets on the bar would locate the bar itself at the correct height. If that's not the case, this is more trouble than it's worth for a street car. Thanks for all the info.
