twin cam motor in a vw bug

I was fortunate enough to go through Barron Colliers museum over the weekend and he has a 64 beetle with a twin cam 4 cyl. motor stuffed in the back. It was really cool. He has a great assortment of Porsche race cars and some very nice road cars as well. 110 cars total (not all Porsches) . Millions of $. Great Museum but no longer open to the public, unfortunately.

paulgtr 11-06-2009 11:30 AM

ok, so what does FTW mean?

Paul LeFevre 11-06-2009 11:33 AM

I really screwed up and went with out a camera. With a flat fan I assume it was a carrera gt motor.

FrdzRed 11-06-2009 03:11 PM

Wow, I've heard that those motors can be worth up to 6 figures......

Carrera 4-cam motors don't have flat fans: they look just like the one in that silver beetle. :)

We have rebuilt a few of these things.

Paul LeFevre 11-08-2009 11:03 AM

thanks Steve for the insight. Just what motor was the one I saw? Flat fan, and what I would call a distributor that looks like yours, but on left side of engine. Similar to the more common position of say an 87-89 carrera. Thanks Paul

The combination of a 911 motor in a Bug was sorted out by a guy named Whitey Davis in the 80s. Whitey's 911 powered Super Beetle would carry both front tires out of the corner when ice racing in a "super stud" class (3/8" studs) and would leave a rooster tail of ice chips quite a bit higher then a light pole. It was jaw dropping and pretty impossible to see anything if you were behind him.
It is currently a winning combo in the Alaska Sports Car Club. Currently Chad Yosh-itomi and Jim Hemmesch are running the same basic package. If I remember correctly Whitey said that his car was about 1300 pounds.
(BTW Wayne: Need to lighten up a touch on the "dirty word" filter so it doesn't block a common Japanese name. Yosh-itomi=Yo****omi?)

Here are a couple pics of Jim's car:

Here are a few videos. (Chad's car is red and Jim's is blue):

And here are a couple in car videos. Chad is a pretty amazing driver so his video is a bit boring because he is out front.

As you can see slideways driving skills are important when the changing sun allows different parts of the track to freeze during a race. The used to put 1500lbs of salt down on the road each day to keep it melted. (Salt-cicles in a race car sucks! A roll cage shouldn't rust away in 3 years...) They switched to using urea in the 80s and I assume they still do for environmental reasons.

Great post. Thanks for the treat! That was really a lot of fun. Both of those car are 6's?

It would be insane if someone was running one of these with a street set up.

Sorry for the hijack.
