'79 Leaking Oil after Autox

Situation:
I did my first autocross with my SC yesterday. The course was a bit longer than 1 mile, and apart from the takeoff was done in second gear--so a fair bit of high RPM driving. The ambient temps were in the mid 70s, but after the second run oil temps got to about 2/3 of the way up the temp gauge, in other words, the temp gauge needle was slightly north of horizontal. Overall the car ran great.

Problem:
After the third run I parked it to let it cool down a bit and check my times. When I got back to the car, I noticed a bit of oil underneath, some was dripping down on the exhaust manifolds, and inside the engine compartment, there was a bit of oil on the rubber shroud pieces, near where the spark plugs are, on the left side only. Overall not much, in the grand scheme of things. There were 2-3 spots on the ground slightly bigger than a few $0.50 pieces. I let it cool down and drove it home after that, and it doesn't seem to be leaking now.

Background:
During the winter I had the motor out of the car, did a valve adjustment, and replaced all those while-you're-in-there things. All work performed or supervised by an experienced, factory trained tech. Since that time it has maybe put a few dime sized drops on the garage floor, but that's it. Also, I did not over-rev the motor, did not miss a shift, etc, and overall drove fast but not abusively.

Questions:
Could this be a result of high oil temps and higher pressure due to driving environment, or could this be a harbinger of other issues? Does anyone else have a car that's pretty dry but will drip a bit when pushed? If this were your car, what, if anything, would you look for?

Thanks!

Tim

Why I hate autocross: Overrev City, dorky wind-outs around a mickey-mouse course. If you're temp gauge was 2/3 of the way up the dial, you were way to hot, particularly at the 40 mph you were probably doing.

I think it is possible your breather / oil tank overflowed a bit, if this was a new leak. How full is your oil tank when hot (on the dipstick)? If it is close to full, it is probably too full to run AX.

I'd set it up in the bottom 1/4 next time and see what happens.

Forgive me, I don't know the oil vent system on an SC, so I could be off base.

Doug
