I have just crawled out from under my 78 sc and I just found out what at first appeared to be leaky oil tubes is NOT! I have oil coming from the cylinder head at the bottom and I really dont know what kind of seal is there so I need you guys to help me out on this as i only have a haynes manual to go from. I really should know more than I do about this car, but the fact is I bought it after not running for two years and I have never driven it. I changed the oil tubes and was able to get it to start but it idles real rough and pops a bit. The biggest thing is that it was smoking really bad from what I thought were leaky oil tubes which made no sense being that they were new. Now I have discovered that the oil is actually coming from the bottom at the cylinder head. My question to you guys is what type of job am i looking at and can anyone help determine the problem based on the symptoms I have given.
Any help is appreciated, thanks! Norm ------------------ Norm Faustino 78 Super Carrera |

The oil leak and the running problems are independent, I suspect. The cylinder head is probably not going to drip oil at the cylinder joint. Dripping oil would come from the other, outer side of the head where it joins the cam holder, or whatever that thing is called. I imagine it's a pain to remove and reinstall this part but it can be done. Sure wouldn't be worth it to me just to fix an oil leak.

Norm,
I don't want to predict doom and gloom, but I think you need to check all of your cylinder head Allen nuts for tightness ... 24 lb-ft is the recommended torque from the spec book, and a 10 mm Allen drive bit is required. Oil seepage at the cylinder/head junction has been known to be a symtom of long term head stud breakage ... ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
