Air box Replacement

Hi everyone, It's looking like I have an air box that has been cracked. My question is, do I need to drop the motor to replace or repair the air box. My vehicle is a 1977 Euro 3.0 Carrera. Thank you

First of all where is yours cracked, they are often repairable as all you need to ensure is that unmetered air is not leaking in? They are constructed in two parts and glued and screwed together, often when you get a backfire it blows the two halves apart (I know, it happened to me). You can put bigger screws in and high temperature gasket sealant to put the whole thing back together. A friend also had a cracked one and got it plastic welded. To answer your question though you do not need to drop the engine.

Hope this helps

it's not necessary to completely drop the engine but i would say at least a partial drop is. i just changed mine and i did a full drop. there were lots of other pieces and parts i replaced as well, mostly all of the 25+ year old rubber pieces, and i don't even want to imagine the hassle of changing the box inside the car.

i got a lot of help from my local pca chapter and it made all the difference having someone on hand who knew exactly what they were doing.

The Porschemonkey and I removed and replaced the airbox. all FI plumbing and the intake runners this spring on my engine w/o lowering the engine. It can be done. Some prefer a partial drop to give enough clearance.

If you need to repair it there are a lot of threads offering help. Some have used a 3M marine sealant called 5200, along w/ pop bottle plastic (PET G) to make repairs. John Walker posted another sealant that is made specifically for this type of plastic.

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone for the input. Looks like I better get to work. I apparently broke some vacuum lines while looking for an oil leak. So when I drove the car, it was popping and coughing, which led to the cracked air box.
