new to the forum - 911 engined 1968 VW Camper

Hi,

New to the forum, been watching a while now, seems the best forum around for porsche related talk.

Anyway I live in the UK with a California imported camper, imported in Jan 09. Very good condition, since having it I have lowered it, fitted disc brakes, porsche 356 chrome rims (copies).

We have used it this year to go on a 1000mile trip around France.

Have had a porsche 911 engine on the garage floor for 18 months waiting to be fitted. Last night had a trial fit of the engine, hence joined the forum as I'll be asking lots of draft porsche engine questions soon.

This is what it looked like when imported in Jan 09 (it's spent a last few years in US in Washington, hence the plate)

What it looks like now.

Old engine out.

Porsche engine in.

I always thought 911 transplants in buses were so cool.

What else will you be modifying to cope with the power? Suspension brakes etc?

Very nice project and welcome to the forum.

Looks like fun. Doesn't Jamie Oliver have a VW bus w/ a Porsche engine?

Welcome to the Forum
You will find a lot of help here

I can see next August holiday crushing around Majorca – or Colorado

My younger brother took Factory Deliver of a ’72 Kombi and I found him a '69 911T engine and collected all the pieces for the conversion. Sadly he felt he needed the money so we never did the conversion – but I still know the details.

First, nice example. Keep it dry and rust free.

What is the engine? Engine number, type number, history and current (measured) condition? Do you intend to use the VW transmission?

Sir. What are your intentions (asks the father)?
Do you want a period VW that will keep up with traffic?
or …
Do you want your camper to embarrass some going up an Alpine or Pyrenees pass?
The latter could also embarrass some pulling onto the M6.

What oil tank do you have?
Do you have the plumbing for a front oil cooler?
Does your fuel tank have two ports for a circulating fuel system?
Do you have access to the parts to turn the engine fan 1.82:1 of the crankshaft speed?
When you converted the brakes, what brakes and spindles/axles did you use? It is desirable to use late (Carrera) rotors and calipers. With some minor adaptation, these will fit.

I’m sure you have already discovered the muffler issue. The ‘cleanest’ installations modify the bumper and leave the muffler somewhat exposed between the body and bumper. You can put what appears to be a ‘step’ above the muffler but still clears the engine cover. Cool is a dual outlet where the tail pipes aren’t obvious. Some install two (non-functional) VW tail pipes under the bumper in the original position.

In my younger years we installed a 692 4-cam in a flatbed transporter, an Empi 2.5 ’66 911 in a Myers Manx dune buggy and other silly things.

Doing this conversion ‘right’ can make for a proper 911 camper. (I just saw a ’38 Cadillac convertible that was Factory built as a camper. Still original paint at 70K mi.)

You will find a lot of help from ‘this side of the pond’. Many here have ‘been there, done that’.

Best,
Grady

Thanks for nice welcome. Engine only in the hole not yet connected. It's a 911T 2.2L with Bosch dizzy and zenith carbs. Modifed flywheel to fit the vw gearbox. I have lowered updated the suspension and fitted discs at the front.

Oh I'm going for the retro classic look. A more popular conversion in the uk is the subaru, but that's too modern for me
