stone chip guards on rear wheel arch
Regaring 911's from 78 to 89.....
Does anyone know how common it was for the stone chip protectors to be fitted up the rear wheel arches? Not many cars seem to have it, but to me it seems like a sound idea. Was it a factory option? Is it something that can still be bought? A genuine Porsche part or aftermarket? Any info appreciated. The car in the pic is fitted with the guards I'm talking about.... ![]() |

There is a factory template for placement and if done correctly they should be mounted underneath the rubber guard that runs front to back on the lower rocker,, just above the stone guard paint on the bottom edge.
Some people do mount the stone guard on non-turbo bodied 911's. Honestly, it looks funny. It's like mounting a 930 tea tray on a Carrera narrow body. It just looks ill-proportioned. However, on the stone guard mounted on narrow bodies - there is a narrow cut (not as wide) that looks tastefully done when done right. I have seen a few and for what it is,,, it can be pulled off,, for what it is again. IMO,, it's like putting a 427 badge on the front fender of your straight six `67 Camaro. Looks cute, but when it come right down to it,, you ain't foolin' no one! ![]() |

I have a narrow body with the narrow body stone guards. I think it looks good. Without them may look a little classier. I did have to reposition them as I did not like where the original PO mounted them. They were not mounted below the rocker rubber and they were to far away from the wheel well.
I will say, there is definetly added protection. The exposed area near the wheel well that was not covered was peppered with stone chips with only 42,000 miles.

I originally purchased a set of these for my BMW Roadster....they work great, magnetic, remove and clean in only a few minutes. I now use the same set on both cars, the roadster and the 911. Not sure if Pelican carries them. But I purchased from company called roadster solutions.

Here is a before and after. The before pictures were too far farward and not tucked underneath the rubber rocker strip. The 2" open space between the stone guard and wheel well was peppered pretty good. The original location was barely on the flare portion that sticks out.
