Pungent exhaust !!!

My '86 Carrera seems to be running quite well however the exhaust fumes are very pungent and overwhelming suggesting to me the engine may be running rich. The engine is stock other than the M&K muffler.

What is the sequence of items to check to get the AF right if in fact thats the problem? Any other thoughts? Oh, the engine has 103,000 miles, 6,000 on a top-end rebuild. The odor issue started after I installed the M&K about a 1,000 miles ago.

Thanks

that's a real problem...my wife is constantly bickering about my pungent exhaust as well.

Seriously...your problem might be only the smell of a new exhaust system breaking itself in. Generally (but not necessarily always), you will experience your idle bouncing or hunting when you're motor is running rich. But, checking the air-fuel mixture on a 3.2 is not a very big deal. Check out the link to a previous thread on this, and shout out with any other questions you have.

Good luck.

Thanks Stone. The odd thing is the car runs well. None of the symtoms listed except the odor.

my brother took his 88 to the shop to have them adjust the mixture to pass emissions. the O2 was disconnected, so the guy retensioned the spring in the AFM and reset the mixture to pass. BTW, his smells rich too but seems to run good, who knows, might run better if the O2 was fixed and mixture set properly.

we put the LM2 on it a while back and got some strange readings, so we did not mess with it at that time.
