randomly dies 82 SC
 

My 82 SC runs like a top 99.99999% of the time. Lately I'll be sitting in traffic waiting for a light to change and it will just go dead. Ignition and other bits are stock, had a full service about 11,000 miles ago. No stumbling or anything it just shuts off and the dash lights come on. It will fire right back up and I'm on my way. It's done it a couple times in the last week. I did a search but didn't find anything described with the same symptoms after looking at several posts. I tried shut down, dies, random as terms.

Is your red fuel pump relay secure? Sometimes the pins may not be making a tight fit inside the plug. Switch it with another one (red or even a black one is fine temporarily). Battery connections tight? Start with the simple stuff first.

It's a common problem on SC.

There is a switch in the fuel injection metering unit that confirms that the sensor plate has been lifted by airflow. When the sensor plate lifts, the fuel pump relay is energized while the engine is running.

The switch has a mounting screw that is electrically isolated by an plastic sleeve. If the sleeve wears through, you can have the fuel pump intermittently cut out while driving, yet work fine when you are troubleshooting.

The starter circuit bypasses this switch, so the engine will always start, but will quit running when you relase the key after starting.

You can temporarily jumper the conection where the fuel pump relay mounts and see if the problem is solved. If so, you need to pull the meterin unit to get to the insulating sleeve.
