Should I Change Paint Color?
Hi guys,
I recently acquired a 1970 911T Targa that is Sepia Brown with brown interior originally. It is a California car zero rust 50,xxx original matching numbers I am in the process of getting the car ready for paint and was wondering if I changed to paint color to red if it it would hurt the value of the car for resale. I am also going to be putting a new carpet and reupholstering the front seats so I would probably change the interior to black if I painted it red. What color do you think I should paint it? Should I stick to the original color combination, or would it be easier to sell later if it was red? Any input is greatly appreciated Thanks! |

stick with the original colors.. unique, correct.
I believe that unless you are building a hot rod project from the rotisserie up, you will negatively impact resale value. Take a look on at the cars for sale.. Red on Black are a dime a dozen (no offence to those with this combo - it is a classic combination), but I think you are perhaps selling your combo short. I assume the paint is tired as you are prepping for paint now, just imagine your curren combo freshened and shiny! Take a look at this thread for inspiration.. post your unusual 911 color HERE !!!! post some pics! I'm sure many of us could throw some great ideas your way to really bring that car into its own! I have a red 911...Sepia Brown is way more cool. I'd keep it original....plus to do a proper color change requires thyree times as much work and $$$$.

My car was originally Sepia Brown with a black dash, door tops and parcel shelf. The seats and door panels were Camel with a camelish color carpet. I had the car painted Guards red. Boy do I wish I would have left it alone. Very unique.

the most unique are the ones that tastefully represent ,
the reds are always a classic in there own but the flash isn't always good , ie -chp,lapd,etc... |

Banned but not out, yet..

As much as I don't like Sephia (I owned a 72 T targa in Sephia for 3 years), I really detest

As Dueller said, when you do a color change unless you really do it right, there's always tell tale signs of the old color left on close inspection. To do it right really means the removal of the fenders, doors, trunk and engine lid.
Sounds like instead of "resale red" you better stay with "sincere Sephia"

This is very personal opinion. Go with the color you like, as long as it's complete repaint which means include doors jams, interior of trunk/engine bay/under hood, etc. Also, I believe that you have to report to DMV.

Thanks for all of your input everybody.
So it sounds like the red would hurt the value of the car more than the brown. I thought if it was brown it might be hard to sell later on down the road, but now I am going to keep it brown and bring it back to life just like it came from the factory. Thanks again for your input guys! |

I´m glad they convinced you. Those old colours have something magical about them. Keeping the paintwork in good condition is as important as the mechanics in my books. Its hard I know but worth it in the long run, besides brown is making a major comeback

Just curious, has the car been painted before? Hopefully if it has the trunk, door jams, and engine compartment are still original.
Whenever you have a car painted those areas usually are done incorrectly whether it is a color change or repaint in the original color. If these areas are original be sure to leave them. This will help resale significantly.
