help with starter wiring
I am slowly getting the wiring back to spec on our 1975 2.7 S.
I am baffled on the starter wiring as I found that the yellow wires that are in the engine compartment, 1 goes to the 14 pin the other to the cold start etc, were not connected. the cold start valve was rewired in the wiring harness to go to the 14 pin directly to the cold start valve. On further examination i found a wire that appears to be connected to the ground at the starter... see the pic. This wire i traced to terminal 50 at the ignition switch. and it was direct wired under the car over the transmission into the passenger compartment. There is a spade connector at the starter for the wire that goes to the ignition switch. My question, is that a ground were i show the wire going to the ignition switch? ![]()

The starter should have a thick (battery cable-sized) wire on a large lug and a heavy red wire on the same lug, and then a yellow wire from the connector on the solenoid to the 14-pin connector. This wire routes with the chassis wiring to the ignition switch. A second yellow wire (with a green stripe) on CIS cars triggers the cold start. Sound like a previous owner routed their own wire from the starter to the key.

Does this help? This is how mine is wired but I have a relay connected so it different but i thought it may be helpful. (1978 SC)
(The thick black cable with the electrical tape around it goes to the relay) ![]() ![]()

starter wiring
Peter
thanks for the photos. There is another connector on my solenoid that was connected to the start wire. It goes directly to the ignition key. The yellow wires wire cut and abandoned (I think when they installed the engine they cut the wiring harness going from the engine bay into the starter area. On my soleonoid, directly below the nut that connects the solenoid to the starter is a slotted screw that has a male connector on it. The wire from the ignition was connected to it. I tested it and it appears to be a ground. I am 99.9% sure is was connected to this point so that is why i am confused as terminal 50 at the ignition is +12v and this would be a direct short. I want to rewire the car to be specs but, this connector is a concern as it is a direct short.

There should be a wire from the ignition switch to terminal 50 on the starter (this is a small blade type lug that receives a female type connector), from terminal 50 of the starter a yellow wire goes to the throttle valve switch. From the other side of the throttle valve switch a wire (also yellow) goes to the thermo-switch on the driver's side chain case, this wire from the throttle switch attaches to one terminal (this is the non-ground side terminal) of the thermo-switch, a second wire is also attached to this same terminal of the thermo-switch and goes to the cold start valve. From the other side (ground side) of the thermo-switch a second wire goes to the cold start valve.
Check the wire going to terminal 50 with the key in the start position to see if you have +12v there.

wiring
Walter:
I have the wiring diagrams for the car. My problem is that there is a second male spade connector on the solenoid that is connected directly to terminal 50 on the ignition terminal block. I had 2 yellow wires connected to the other male spade connector and the 2 red wires. I will let you know what i find, if i rewire it to what is in the specs i should be ok then.
