OK I am stupid..Where does the O-ring go?

I removed the oil thermostat to replace the oring. Problem is, I don't see where it is supposed to go. Please help an idiot...I am sure it's not that complicated.
this is on an 86 carrera. pics would be nice. I have searched everywhere but cant find anything.

Never mind. The old o-ring is black, hard and looked like metal. The edges were squared off so it just didn't look like that was the o-ring.
Told you I was an idiot.

Take something apart.. then panic and post to the forum... then figure it out myself.
